I only recently learned of burr baskets when my 12-year old nephew mentioned he wanted to put one together for a friend. "Burr basket? What is a burr basket?" I asked. He explained it's something you give to someone you like to keep them cozy during the winter. You fill a basket with things like a blanket, water bottle, Jellycat stuffies, Starbucks gift cards, hot chocolate, and candles. My question to him? "Whatever happened to just exchanging notes in class if you like someone? Now you have to drop off a basket?" That, ofcourse, elicted an eye roll. It would have made perfect sense if "Whatever, Old Millenial" could have been written on his face.
So off to Tik Tok I went in order to research them. I assumed the name referred to burr - as in - you say brrr when you're cold. Not so! It gets its quirky name from the idea of little treats "sticking together" like burrs on a hiking trail. Aw, how cute.

I have to admit - the idea of a Valentine basket or burr basket sounds kind of cute and who doesn't want to be surprised with a basket full of goodies during the cold long days of winter? Putting the baskets together is pretty straightforward. Pick a basket, tote bag, or even a cute box and fill it with shredded paper, tissue, or anything else you can use as a base to add height and cushioning for your items.
