Classic Preppy Aesthetic! A Summer Style Guide For Women

I don't know about you, but preppy hasn't really been my style - ever. I lean more towards boho meets athleisure meets black upon black upon black. Quite honestly, I don't even know if I have a signature style but if there is one I want to pull off effortlessly since it's so not me - it would be preppy. I'd love to have that coastal chic preppy aesthetic that so many women pull off so effortlessly. Anytime I've tried in the past I look like a pathetic version of Claire from The Breakfast Club. But I reeeeeally want to pull it off this summer - boat shoes and all.
There’s something undeniably timeless about preppy style—clean lines, polished details, and an effortlessly put-together vibe that never goes out of fashion. After years of minimalist and oversized trends dominating the scene, the preppy aesthetic is making a major comeback in 2025, and I'm here for it.

But this isn’t the preppy style of your high school days (though we’ll always have a soft spot for popped collars and rugby shirts). Instead, the modern take on preppy fashion is refined, sophisticated, and perfectly suited for women over 30 who want to embrace a classic yet fresh look.
The preppy aesthetic originated in the early 20th century, inspired by the uniforms and leisurewear of elite East Coast preparatory schools (think: Ivy League universities, country clubs, and sailing regattas). Brands like Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, and Brooks Brothers built empires on crisp oxford shirts, pleated skirts, cable-knit sweaters, and loafers.
In the 1980s and early 2000s, preppy style had a major moment—remember The Preppy Handbook and Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf? —before taking a backseat to boho, streetwear, and athleisure trends. But now, with the rise of quiet luxury and a return to polished dressing, preppy fashion is back in a big way. And I have to say - I think i'm going to embrace it this go-around.
I honestly had no idea how to begin wearing preppy styles at my age without looking like either my friend's country club mom in the 90's or like a boho hippie hiding in preppy sheep's clothing... so I did a bit of research to figure the best way to incorporate this style into my wardrobe.
How to Wear Preppy Style in 2025 (Without Looking Dated)
It seems the key to nailing the modern preppy look is balancing classic pieces with contemporary touches. Here’s a few pointers I found helpful:
Mix Tailoring with Softness – Pair a structured blazer with a silk blouse or a pleated midi skirt with a relaxed sweater.
Play with Proportions – Try a longer, draped cardigan over a collared shirt or wide-leg trousers instead of skinny pants.
Update the Color Palette – While navy, white, and kelly green will always be preppy staples, consider adding muted neutrals (oatmeal, taupe) or unexpected pops (deep burgundy, cobalt blue). Like I said, most of what's in my closet is black so I'm going to ease into this with sticking to navy and the muted neutrals.
Accessorize Thoughtfully – A sleek leather tote, pearl earrings, or a striped silk scarf elevate the look without feeling costume-y. I had a friend in high school who wore pearls over her t-shirts! Looking back - it was actually pretty adorable and I think I'm going to throw pearls on with both casual and dressier outfits. Why not?
Without further ado, here are some pretty pieces I'm loving for the Summer of 2025!

If you’re ready to embrace the preppy revival, these tried and true brands offer timeless pieces with a modern twist (many of which are featured above):
Talbots – A go-to for polished workwear and classic knits. Don't knock it until youve checked it out. I think of Talbots and I think of my Grandma but I went into the store recently and they have some ADORABLE little preppy pieces!
J.McLaughlin – Preppy with a touch of whimsy (perfect for weekend brunches). A little on the pricier side, so if you're looking for a few investment pieces - check it out.
Vineyard Vines – Nautical-inspired staples that feel fresh. You can find some great used pieces on Poshmark so you don't have to break the bank to get the look.
Ralph Lauren – The ultimate heritage brand for blazers, button-downs, and equestrian-inspired pieces. Check out Nordstrom Rack for some discounted prices.
Boden – Bright colors and playful prints done in an elevated way. The Boden kids line is so cute as well - I've heard the Royals dress their kids in Boden! ;)
Barbour – For that effortlessly chic country-club vibe (their waxed jackets are iconic). These coats are expensive but man - are they ever worth it!
Tuckernuck – A curated mix of classic and contemporary preppy finds. I heart Tuckernuck.
Brooks Brothers – Timeless shirting and suiting for a polished office look. Also great for the men in your life.
Draper James – Southern charm meets preppy elegance (think gingham and puff sleeves).
Lacoste – Sporty-chic polos and sleek tennis skirts that never go out of style.
Preppy fashion is more than just a trend—it’s a mindset. It’s about looking polished, feeling confident, and embracing pieces that stand the test of time. Whether you’re updating your work wardrobe or just want to infuse a little more classic charm into your everyday style, the preppy revival is the perfect opportunity to invest in pieces you’ll love for years to come.
