I am ashamed to admit I didn't ready as much in January as I had hoped. I try my hardest to get through at least 7 - 8 books a month but I fell short at the start of 2025. It could have been my getting over a terrible bout of holiday Covid, perhaps my paralysis from the onslaught of news and rapid changes in our country, or just sheer laziness and the overwhelming need to hibernate in the cold of January. Whatever it was, I'm over it and looking forward to reading my little heart out in February and March. I'm focusing on fiction for the next few weeks but I hope to do a post soon on the best non-fiction released in early 2025. In case you are wondering what I DID read in Janauary - here's a quick list and my general scores for each one. You can check out my full post about recommended January reads for additional suggestions. Happy Reading, everyone!

My January Reads:
And on to my bucket list for the next month or so....
This novel is a sharp and insightful exploration of fame, ambition, and the entertainment industry. It follows a group of young actors who land roles in a highly anticipated TV series, catapulting them into the spotlight. As they navigate the pressures of sudden fame, they grapple with the personal and professional challenges that come with being in the public eye. I love anything Hollywood/celebrity focused so I'm really looking forward to this one!
I loved her other two books, Evie Drake Starts Over and Flying Solo, so I'm excited to give this a go! Back After This is a heartfelt and humorous novel that explores themes of nostalgia, friendship, and the passage of time. The story revolves around a group of friends who grew up in the 1980s (yes! Me too!) and are now navigating the complexities of adulthood. At its core, the book reflects on how the past shapes who we are and how we carry those memories with us. Given my childhood was in the 80's and 90's - I'm excited for the trip down memory lane.
This darkly whimsical and suspenseful novel blends elements of psychological thriller and surreal fiction. The story follows a group of women who find themselves in a mysterious, dollhouse-like institution called the Dollhouse Academy. Each woman has a unique backstory, but they all share a sense of disorientation and unease about their surroundings. As they navigate the strange rules and rituals of the academy, they begin to uncover unsettling truths about the place and its purpose. Sounds broody and mysterious!
This is a story that delves into themes of self-discovery, resilience, and the complexities of human relationships. The novel follows the journey of its protagonist as they navigate a pivotal period in their life, marked by personal challenges and transformative experiences.
A Killing Cold: A Novel by Kate Alice Marshall is a gripping thriller that combines suspense, mystery, and psychological depth. The story centers around a small, close-knit community that is rocked by a series of chilling events, including a murder that brings long-buried secrets to the surface.
The story follows the protagonist, a relatable and endearing woman, as she navigates the chaotic world of love and relationships. After a series of disappointing encounters with men who all seem to fit the stereotypical "Tom, Dick, and Harry" archetypes, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Along the way, she learns valuable lessons about love, self-worth, and what she truly wants in a partner. This is billed as a charming and humorous romantic comedy - perfect for all those February Valentine vibes.
This story follows a group of retirees who migrate to Florida for the winter months to escape the harsh cold of the north. It tackles themes of family, identity, and the search for belonging. This one interests me as my parents, and my friend's parents, have reached the "Snowbird" age and it seems like a peek behind their curtains.
The story centers around Miss Pauline, a strong-willed and resourceful woman who, after a lifetime of caring for others, decides to find a house of her own where she can live life on her own terms. As Miss Pauline embarks on her quest, she encounters various challenges and obstacles, but also forms meaningful connections with the people she meets along the way. The novel explores her journey of self-discovery and the fulfillment that comes from creating a space that truly reflects her identity and desires.
Wishing you all well, my fellow book nerds.
