I don’t know about you, but keeping your kids off of tech and interested in the land of reality can be tricky. "Just 5 more minutes, mom! I need to finish the round!!". The struggle is real, my friends. I’m constantly bugging my friends for suggestions on the newest and most engaging games to play as a family or have on our game table when their friends come over. I hope you love and find these games as much fun as we do!
Hues and Cues (Age 8+)
This has a 4.7 star rating and almost 6,000 reviews on Amazon for a reason. It's a blast! It’s easy to learn, and while the age says 8+, I think kids as young as five could easily get the hang of it. Players have to use one word to describe a color (think: “Chocolate” for brown). It’s hilarious to see what cues people use to describe certain hues, as it definitely shows people’s differences in how they see things.
Tapple (Ages 8+)
We just got this one for my son’s 9th birthday. It is fast-paced and creates excited, chaotic responses that almost always result in a fit of giggles. You pick a category (e.g., Things at a Party), and you have 10 seconds to name an answer for that category by using any open letter on the wheel.
Telestrations - (Ages 12+)
This game is a staple in our house. We might use it more for our adult game nights when our friends get together than with the kids, but it's equally as fun with kids. It says it’s 12+, but one of our kids, who was 7, could play. It’s basically playing telephone through sketching. And the worse the artist, the more hilarious the results!
Beat the Parents (Ages 6+)
What kid doesn’t want to be the champion over their parents? On top of it, each team has to write a wager before they begin to play (e.g., vacuum the house for one week), which makes it an extra incentive for the kids to win. Enter into a world of fun with trivia questions and challenges.
The Uzzle (Ages 4+)
This was a Christmas gift for us, and we knew nothing about it. In order to keep our son from begging to stare at a phone when we went out to dinner we took this game with us. Holy cow, was this fun! It’s a perfect small game to take to restaurants or on trips. It’s a puzzle game where you get a pattern on a card, use your tiles to match the pattern, and whoever finishes first wins. A bonus is that it’s a great way to help kids grow their problem-solving abilities. (Sidenote: Our server was so intrigued by it that she went out and bought it the next day!)
Herd Mentality (Ages 10+)
It's a hilarious way to try and guess what the rest of your family and friends are thinking. A simple question is asked, like “Name a type of hat,” and everyone needs to respond. The trick is perhaps not writing down the first thing that comes to mind but guessing the most popular answer. Again, it can be played by kids much younger than 10.
Left Right Center (Ages 5+)
Easy peasy and oh so portable. This is a dice game with a super simple concept. We usually play with quarters or candy. You roll the dice to figure out if you pass your quarters/candy or pass them to someone else. You pass a quarter to the right for each R you roll, one to the left for any L you roll, to the center for the C, and keep if you roll a dot. You win if you’re the last person with the winnings in front of them—so much fun and fast-paced. (Also suitable for the littles working on learning their right and left).
