Our weekend was chalk full of lacrosse and little boys. Our son had a 2-day tournament which meant baking in the hot sun watching games all day Saturday and Sunday. Such is life of the sports mom!
FRIDAY EVENING
Friday night he had a friend over and we hit up a local food truck rally and I had the most delicious vegan burrito I’ve ever had. I’m still dreaming about it. I’ve been searching around for a few recipes to recreate it. My burrito was made with a mushroom-walnut taco “meat”, black beans and vegan nacho cheese. I found a reciepe for the mushroom walnut taco meat that sounds pretty close to what I had. And also found the nacho cheese reciepe that sounds pretty darn good and has a 5-star rating. The rest, like seasoned black beans, pico, and a cilantro lime sauce, seem like something I can easily piece together without guidance. Stay tuned for a post about how it turns out!
SATURDAY
Saturday morning, I got up early to enjoy a cup of coffee and gaze out at my backyard, which seems to flourish with new flowers and leaves every day. We loaded up the car with lacrosse gear, snacks, cooling towels, plenty of water and our favorite wagon to pull stuff from field-to-field. At first, I thought a wagon was kind of silly, but my mother-in-law gifted it to us for Christmas, and it really has made life easier when we have these full-day sporting commitments. (I also plan to use it to haul stuff down to the beach this summer.) There are couple of versions I’ve seen other parents using and I’ve put them below for easy reference. Two tips - collapsable is key for getting it in and out of vehicles and the bigger the wheels, like the one in the middle below, the better it does on sand.
Saturday night, my son had a sleepover at my brother’s house with his cousins and Papa as my sister-in-law was out of town. BOYS NIGHT! What did I do with a quiet house? Folded laundry and read a few chapters (okay, half the book) of The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder. Pretty good so far! I’ll be sure to include a detailed summary and rating in my next book review post.
SUNDAY
Sunday we were back to the fields. It was in the mid-80’s here in Michigan which meant lots of pink cheeks and sweaty hair for those boys. They lost both games but I was so proud of them. Not a single boy was pouting over the losses but instead were congratulating each other for all the hard effort and giving each other hugs. It’s so good to see sportsmanship still exists in a world where so many of these parents seem to be teaching their kids that excelling in sports at such a tender age is the be-all and end-all of their little lives. I did see a few coaches on other teams yelling at the kids for losing, and it broke my heart. I am so disheartened with what sports have become for these young kids. This mentality parents and coaches are pushing that they must win at all costs is really baffling to me.
Sunday night we had burgers on the grill and I pulled a few weeds as the heat started to die down. We’re just starting the first Harry Potter book so we ended with our day reading about Harry’s first trip to Diagon Alley. We’re excited to see what awaits Harry next!
I hope you had a restful or productive weekend - whichever you needed. I’m looking forward to a week of continued weeding, planting, biking, writing, using my new paint-by-numbers kit, visiting our local farmer’s market, the last of the lacrosse practices, and trying out those vegan burritos!
"It's not that we spend five days looking forward to just two. It's that most people do what they enjoy most on those two days. Imagine living a life where everyday are your Saturdays and Sundays. Make everyday your weekend. Make everyday a play-day…” - James A. Murphy, The Waves of Life Quotes and Daily Meditations
