What Makes a Kitchen Gadget Essential in My Test
When I pick a gadget to add to this list, I always check:
- Daily utility — does it get used, not just stored
- Ease of cleaning & maintenance — because who has time for fussy parts
- Dual or multi-functionality — can it do more than one job
- Durability & parts availability — if something breaks, can it be fixed
- Value & cost per use — is it worth the shelf space

Instant Pot
The Instant Pot is a game-changer for busy moms. I’ll admit – I was initially scared of this thing. Will the lid pop up and send hot soup flying at my face? (And I wonder why I overthink everything.) Once I learned how to use it, this multi-functional electric pressure cooker can whip up meals in a fraction of the time traditional cooking methods require. From soups and stews to yogurt and grains, the Instant Pot does it all. Don’t be scared – it’s easier than you think!
Ninja Air Fryer
Ofcourse I made the air fryer discovery during the pandemic. I was ordering anything and everything that made cooking easier since we couldn’t go out to eat – and I’ve been using it religiously ever since! You can use it for so much and it cooks a lot of things in a fraction of the time it takes an oven. My personal favorites in the air fryer? Brussel Sprouts, salmon, heating up left over pizza and quick chicken nuggets when little stomachs are demanding food RIGHT AWAY. Oh, and these are popular…According to a YouGov survey, 68% of Americans say they plan to buy a kitchen appliance in the next year — and among those, 29% are considering an air fryer. Jump on the trend!
Mandoline Slicer
Initially, I thought this would be a silly purchase. It’s just another form of knife, right? Wrong! Once I got a great mandoline, it made slicing veggies and potatoes a breeze. And I’m obsessed with the nice uniform cuts where you can even make things whisp thin. This particular mandoline is what I own, and as an added bonus, it comes with gloves so you don’t accidentally cut yourself. Win/Win.
Dutch Oven
I blabbered about my love of a Dutch oven in a post about making Jalapeno Popper soup. Well, I’m stating it again here because that’s how much I love it. Nothing beats whipping out a Dutch oven on a snowy Sunday morning and starting a pot of soup or your favorite all-day simmering marinara. I have the fancy Le Creuset model that I received as a wedding gift, but the Amazon Basics Dutch Oven boasts a 4.7-star rating with over 46k reviews and is a fraction of the price.
Microplane
I use this Microplane way more than I ever anticipated. Great for zesting everything from lemon rind to adding ginger to a stir-fry – it’s such a simple tool that can add so much flavor to a meal. Plus, you look pretty cool using it to grate cheese over people’s pasta. Gives you a real professional chef’s flair.
Cuisinart Immersion Blender
See: Dutch Oven. I use an immersion blender in my Dutch Oven almost every time I make soup. I’ve also used it for everything from Thanksgiving gravy to homemade mayo to whipped cream. It’s so versatile and handy.
Cast Iron Skillet
The best part of a cast-iron skillet is that it gets really hot and it stays really hot. It’s great for searing meat, frying chicken or even making cornbread. (Definitely don’t use it for anything gentle like a delicate fish or making sauces).
Salt Box
I keep my salt box right next to the stove (Fun fact: I got mine on a trip to Hawaii not really knowing how or when I’d use it and I’ve used it daily for the last 15 years!). Such an easy and convenient way to throw a pinch or five to whatever it is you’re in the middle of cooking. And never skimp on the salt!!
Potato Ricer
I was on vacation with my cousins at a lake house, and they made homemade hashbrowns every morning using a potato ricer. I was sold! Also suitable for things like making guacamole and mashing chickpeas to make hummus. I don’t know why but this is so satisfying to use.
Chef’s Knife
I truly cannot fathom not having a good kitchen knife. It’s the star of the kitchen…the workhorse… the reason why we’re not eating large chunks of everything! I prefer Japanese knives – in particular the Global 7″ Chefs Knife. I have smaller hands and find the design of Global knife handles a perfect fit. If Global isn’t your thing, do some research. This is the one kitchen tool that spending a bit more is worth the money.
FAQs
I’d suggest an air fryer. It solves everyday friction: you can cook faster which is a Godsend when you have kids at home.
No, but prioritizing multi-function tools is key. That’s why I encourage dual-use picks (e.g. a chopper that also serves as a storage bowl). And always pick tools that stack or nest to save space.
Wash soon after use, avoid soaking non-waterproof motors, dry fully, and store with parts together (so you don’t lose blades). For probes or delicate parts, always use gentle detergents.
