The Best Packable Travel Dresses

**Updated January 2026

If you’ve read my last few blog posts, you know that my family and I recently took a 10-day trip down the coast of Maine (more details on the trip to come, if you’re interested). However, a huge pet peeve I discovered during the trip is what prompted me to write this post! We knew we were going to be in and out of hotels, as we were changing locations every few days, so I didn’t want to lug around a full size suitcase as I didn’t want to have repack a ton of clothes each time. I also didn’t want a cumbersome bag that I had to haul in and out of the back of our rental car. So, carry on size is where I landed. I have never, in my life, tried to pack for a 10-day trip (or even a week!) in a carry-on, so I knew I had to get creative. I kept it to two pairs of pants, a couple of dresses, a few interchangeable tops, one pair of shoes, and one pair of sandals – you get the gist. I rolled everything as tightly as possible and put it into gallon-sized plastic bags, which I then inserted into packing cubes. I am pleased as punch to report that I did just fine with a minimal amount of clothing. I didn’t even wear everything I packed!! Clutch those pearls, ladies.

Best Packable Travel Dresses

The pet peeve part I mentioned above? The dresses I packed were made of straight-forward heavy cotton. After rolling the dresses and squishing them into plastic bags only to jam them into packing cubes, they became a wrinkled nightmare when I took them out of my bag. After the first few nights, I ended up leaving them in the suitcase and stopped pulling them out because I didn’t want to deal with ironing or steaming them each time I wanted to wear one.

Perhaps your common sense alarms are going off, and you’re asking yourself – what did she think was going to happen with cotton dresses? Hellloooooooooo! To be honest, I wasn’t really thinking about it at the time of packing! When I got home, I immediately started researching the best packable travel dresses to have at the ready for our next trip. Dresses are so easy while traveling – you can dress them up or down, and they are great for everything from exploring cities to long walks to a nice dinner out. I asked a few friends about their go-to packable travel dresses as well, and I’ve pulled together a great list of the cutest and most stylish packable dresses that I hope will help you look trendy and pulled together and wrinkle-free on your next trip!

Things to Keep in Mind About Packable Travel Dresses

What makes a dress truly packable for travel?

A truly packable travel dress is made from lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabric that can be folded or rolled without losing its shape. The best options bounce back quickly after being unpacked, take up minimal suitcase space, and do not require ironing. Dresses with stretch blends, jersey knits, or performance fabrics tend to travel best.

Are packable travel dresses wrinkle resistant?

Most high-quality packable travel dresses are designed to be wrinkle resistant, but no fabric is completely wrinkle proof. Materials like ponte knit, modal blends, and technical performance fabrics resist creasing far better than linen or structured cotton. Rolling dresses instead of folding them also helps prevent wrinkles during travel.

What fabrics are best for packable travel dresses?

The most travel-friendly fabrics include jersey knit, ponte, modal, polyester blends, and technical performance fabrics. These materials are lightweight, breathable, and hold their shape well. Avoid stiff fabrics or heavy weaves, which tend to wrinkle and take up more room in a suitcase.

How do you pack travel dresses to avoid wrinkles?

Rolling dresses instead of folding them is one of the most effective ways to minimize wrinkles. Placing them inside packing cubes or layering them between softer items like t-shirts can also help. Unpacking dresses as soon as you arrive and hanging them in a steamy bathroom can smooth out minor creases.

Are packable travel dresses easy to wash while traveling?

Most packable travel dresses are designed to be low-maintenance and easy to wash. Many can be hand-washed in a sink and air-dried overnight, making them ideal for longer trips or carry-on-only travel. Always check the care label before washing.
