Gold Dresses for the Holidays

The last two Christmases and New Year’s, I’ve been quite sick. It was rough and not fun, to say the least. Things like trying to get those last-minute packages wrapped or needing to run to the store for a forgotten gift felt like monumental tasks when all I wanted to do was lay down and sleep the holidays away. I had purchased this really fun top to wear Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. It had huge balloon sleeves with multi-color sequins and I was going to pair it with faux leather pants. I was so excited for a festive look. Until the 22nd came and I was out of commission – fever, body chills, you name it. Luckily, I got over the worst of it by Christmas Eve, but the last thing I wanted to do was get dressed up. I barely had the energy to muster a shower and throw a cozy sweater over my head.

Gold Dresses for the Holidays

This year? I’m going all out! (And God help me if I get sick again, knock on wood.) I started poking around to look for fun holiday dresses and outfits and I am seeing the most adorable gold dresses popping up everywhere. Gold must be the look for holiday dresses in 2025 and I am here for it. Gold is not just a color, but a mood. According to style editors, “few colors capture the festive mood quite like gold” because it reflects light beautifully and instantly elevates an outfit. The best part? Gold flatters almost every skin tone. Warm gold tones flatter deeper or olive undertones, while champagne or rose-gold versions are flattering for lighter complexions. Metallics like gold also photograph beautifully in low-light and festive environments, making them a smart choice when you know there will be lots of photos.

How To Style A Gold Dress For The Holidays

Tights vs. Bare Legs

If you’re in a colder climate like me, opaque or sheer tights can anchor a short gold dress into winter territory (think sheer black tights or nylons/pantyhose under a gold mini for polish). I’m seeing that nylons are making a big comeback so don’t feel shy about wearing them! For a midi or maxi gold dress (especially in satin or metallic mesh), bare legs and strappy heels or pointed-toes tend to look more elevated. Just remember, avoid overly patterned tights (since gold is already statement-making) and instead choose neutral tones like black or nude or a very subtle shimmer if you want extra glam.

Footwear

  • Strappy metallic sandals (gold, champagne, or even rose-gold) work beautifully with a gold dress.
  • Classic black pumps or ankle-strap heels are a chic contrast, especially if your dress is heavily sequined or very shiny.
  • Boots can work if you’re doing a party-with-a-twist or a day-to-evening look (especially with a midi). Choose sleek leather (not too chunky) so it stays dressy.
  • For flats: If you need comfort (you’re chasing a 6-year-old or running between events), go for elegant ballet flats or embellished loafers in metallic or patent…just make sure they don’t diminish the dress’s glam.

Accessories: How Much Is Too Much?

  • If your dress is a subtle metallic mesh or satin, you can add one statement earring or cuff bracelet.
  • If sequined or ultra-shimmer: stick to small stud earrings and a simple clutch.
  • Bags/clutches: Nude, black, metallic (silver or gold) all can work—just avoid colors that fight with the gold (like bright neons).
  • Layering pieces: A fitted black blazer or cropped jacket can tone down the look for a more transitional event (e.g., an office holiday party).

Outerwear

If outerwear is needed, you really cannot go wrong with a classic black wool coat. I got mine from a store in Toronto many moons ago. It is an a-line ankle length cashmere/wool blend that belts at the waist and I love the fact that I can wear it with a fancy dress or throw it on over my jeans and a sweater. If you haven’t added one to your arsenal, it’s a must! Other good options are a faux fur shrug or for extra drama, a floor length cape.

Here are some of the gold dresses for the holiday season that will be a showstopper for any room you walk into! There are so many beautiful gold dresses and skirts out there, but this is a collection of my personal favorites that feel the most festive and fabulous for holiday parties. I hope you find something you love! If not, check out Nordstrom, Tuckernuck, Macy’s, and Revolve for some of the best offerings. Even Amazon has some great options at budget-friendly prices (you’ll see some included below).

FAQs

Is gold too much for a daytime holiday event?

No if you choose a more muted metallic finish, pair with a blazer or cardigan, and tone down accessories.

Can I wear gold if I’m plus-size or petite without it overwhelming me?

YES!!! OFCOURSE!!! Look for defined waistlines or A-line silhouettes; gold enhances curves when balanced properly.

How do I ensure the metallic doesn’t look cheap or costume-y?

Stick to quality fabric, avoid overly reflective foil “sheet” look, and keep accessories and styling grounded.
