The Sideline Essentials Parents Actually Need This Spring

I’m writing this article as I’m in the car driving three hours home from a weekend lacrosse tournament for my son’s U12 team. Saturday was gloomy, overcast and chilly at 41 degrees. Sunday brought blue skies but with an 8am start time, it was 38 degrees. By the time we left it was 57 in the full sun and I (along with the players) was peeling off my layers. The team lost 3 of the 4 games but they held their heads high. I will say, having a waterpark at the resort near the tournament is a good antidote to the sting of loss.

If you have a child in spring sports like baseball, softball, lacrosse, flag football, or tennis, you already know the drill. Spring sports are a wildly unpredictable beast. You might start your morning wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot coffee, only to end the afternoon lathered in SPF 50 while desperately seeking shade. You are essentially packing for three different seasons in a single twelve-hour window.

Over the years, I’ve learned that surviving tournament days is all about preparation. You cannot control the weather, the referee’s calls, or the snack schedule, but you CAN control how comfortable you are on the sidelines. Let’s talk about the gear that actually makes a difference when you’re spending your entire weekend at the fields.

Why You Need a Dedicated Sideline Survival Kit

For a long time, I tried to wing it. I’d grab a flimsy camping chair from the garage, throw a few water bottles in a canvas tote, and hope for the best. That strategy usually ended with requests for snacks, Gatorade, a band-aid, an extra pair of dry socks and a sweatshirt. I’d have to direct him to another mother more prepared than I.

Arming yourself with the right gear isn’t just about physical comfort (although saving your back from those metal bleachers is a huge plus). It is about preserving your sanity. When you are comfortable, dry, and well-fed, you can actually enjoy watching your kids play. You become the mom who has that spare band-aid, an extra phone charger, and a dry place to sit.

My Go-To Spring Sports Sideline Gear

Everything I’m recommending here are items I personally own, use, and drag out of my trunk every single weekend from March through June. Whether you are a baseball mom or navigating the tennis courts, these pieces are worth every penny.

blue rocking camping chair

GCI Outdoor Folding Rocking Chair

This is so comfortable. I get nervous during games and often pace or stand. But a rocking chair is another good for way for me to move my body. This folds up nicely and has a handle making it easy to go from your trunk to the field.

rolling black collapsible wagon

Foldable Collapsible Wagon

I don’t use a wagon if it’s a one-off game. But on tournament weekends, when you’re walking all over to change fields all day, this is an easy way to transport coolers, extra equipment, snacks, umbrellas, etc.

cooling towels

Cooling Towels

These are a lifesavers on those blazing hot days. I like to have these on-hand not only for those of us on the sidelines but it’s a great way for the athletes to cool down in between games and matches, especially if they are wearing helmets. Put them on the back of your neck for instant cool down effects.

waterproof sherpa blanket

Waterproof Sherpa Lined Outdoor Blanket

I forgot my blanket this past weekend and oh how I regretted it! This sherpa-lined blanket is wind and water resistant making you dry, warm and comfortable on those extra cold days.

red clip on umbrella

Sport-Brella Adjustable Umbrella

This clip-on umbrella has a clamp that attaches to various chairs and wagons. This keeps you protected from both UV Rays and any inclement weather.

hunter black short rain boots

Hunter Original Waterproof Boots

I didn’t understand the importance of having the right footwear until I ruined a brand new pair of suede sneakers trudging across a muddy field. Rain boots or other waterproof footwear are a must for rainy days or even the day after rainy days.

blue portable charger

Portable Charger

This is a no-brainer addition to any bag. If you’re on the sidelines all day long, you’re likely going to charge your devices at some point – especially if you’re draining your battery by recording games.

Igloo rolling cooler

Igloo Rolling Cooler

Keep those all important beverages and sandwiches cold with this rolling cooler. Easy transport with the handles and wheels. Extra points for the fun colors this comes in. This holds up to 33 cans so plenty of room for all-day food and beverage needs.

welly first aid kit

Welly First Aid Kit

I had to bust this out on three separate occasions over the weekend. This little first aid kit comes with various size bandages, triple antibiotic ointment, hydrocordisone and ibuprofen. I add individual alcohol swabs to mine to round it out.

jcrew long raincoat

J.Crew Perfect Raincoat

This is called the perfect raincoat for a reason. It’s slightly oversized which makes it a good option if you’re having to dress in layers. It also hits below the knee so if you’re sitting in stands or in a chair, it will keep your uppper legs covered and dry.

lululemon animal print sling bag

Lululemon Small Sling Bag

I don’t like to take a huge purse to games, but I still need a small bag for my phone, keys, chapstick and other small essentials. This sling bag is a great hands-free casual bag that still adds a pop of personality to any game-day outfit. It’s also water resistant which is an added bonus.

mosquito bug patches

Nat Pat Outdoor Adventure Kit

My cousin turned me on to these little patches. They are AMAZING for keeping mosquitos and bugs at bay. With all natural ingredients, just put a small patch on your shirt and the rest is magic. It deters everything from mosquitoes to flies.

snacklebox

Snacklebox

I’ve packed entire bags of chips and other snacks, opened them at a game and eaten maybe 1/3 of what’s in them. This snacklebox allows you to bring a bunch of different snacks in a small amount. I like to fill mine with a mix of fruit, nuts and veggies and then throw in a few “junk food” items like pretzels, M&Ms or other small candies.

tan and cream fedora for summer

Wallaroo Fedora

I almost always wear a hat to games. I have really sensitive skin and like to keep it protected as much as possible. It also shields the sun and makes watching games a bit easier, even with sunglasses. This fedora is a stylish alternative to a standard baseball hat.

Sun Bum Sunscreen Stick

Sun Bum Face and Body SPF 40

Sunscreen is an obvious need for any outdoor spectating. I like this one in particular because it’s small, won’t explode in your bag and it’s a one-stop-shop for SPF for both your body and face.

Sorel Waterproof Sneakers

Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof Sneaker

I wore these to the last tournament I attended. I knew the morning was going to be wet but the afternoon warm so I didn’t want to wear full on rain boots for the whole today. These kept my feet dry and snug all day.

stanley flip straw water bottle

Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Water Bottle

I like this particular water bottle because it has a big handle making it easy to carry. Additionally, I like the flip straw that you can snap shut keeping your water nice and icy cold all day.

Yeti Backpack Cooler in peach

YETI Hopper Backpack Cooler

This is another cooler option if you want to be fully hands-free. Yes, it’s pricey but it’s worth every penny. If you know YETI, you know they are extremely well made products. It even has an exterior pocket that can hold keys, a phone and a few other small items so you can leave your purse at home.

blue yellow and white game day seeded bracelet

Ink + Alloy Game Day Bracelets

I am not one to slap on a ton of gear with my son’s team name and logo but I know most people are. So when I want a sublte pop of his team’s colors, I will wear these seeded bracelets in his team colors.

atheleta gray bomber jacket

Athleta Jetset Bomber Jacket

Need a lightweight jacket that’s casual, cool and stylish? This is it! The best part? It has a stowable hood in the high neck collar should there be a sudden weather change.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tournament Days

How do you keep food and drinks cold all day?

I swear by the coolers linked above and both fit into a wagon if you decide you don’t want to pull or wear one. I freeze water bottles the night before and use them as ice packs. By the afternoon, they melt into ice-cold drinking water!

What is the best way to stay warm during early morning games?

Beyond dressing in layers, I always bring a blanket. Better yet? Get a battery operated blanket. You find them on Amazon for under $100, and they are worth their weight in gold during those 8:00 AM lacrosse games when the frost is still on the grass.

How do you organize all this gear in your car?

I keep a large, structured trunk organizer in the back of my SUV. During the week, it holds my groceries. But on the weekends, it holds the sunscreen, bug spray, extra socks, and first-aid kit so they aren’t rolling around the back of my car.

See You on the Sidelines

Being a sports mom is a massive commitment of time, energy, and resources. But when you are sitting in a comfortable chair, completely dry, watching your kid do something they love? It is the best feeling in the world. Grab your waterproof boots and your wagon, and I’ll see you out on the fields!
