Cowboy Core: It’s Way More Wearable Than You Think

Cowboy core has officially ridden into the mainstream, and no, you don’t need a cowboy hat or fringe vest to pull it off. This version of the trend is less rodeo, more quietly cool. I’ve been seeing a lot of subtle horse and equestrian looks at stores lately. I recently went to… a market full of local artisans and there was one woman that had “cowboy core” but in a super elevated way. A beautiful cardigan with a horse on the back. A gold chain with a horseshoe charm. But when you think of this trend, think classic denim, good boots, leather accents, and pieces that feel timeless rather than trendy.

I really do think anyone, no matter your age, can pull off the cowboy or equestrian aesthetic just as long as you approach it with a light hand. This is one of those trends that works best when it feels effortless and lived-in, not costume-y. I was at a boutique pop-up show a few weeks ago, and they had the cutest cardigans with horses on the back. I was with my mom, and she commented that she’s not really into the whole cowboy/equestrian look, but the sweater was really quite adorable. It got me thinking that the whole “cowboy core” trend has become so much more elevated than your standard cowboy boots, fringe jackets, and suede. It’s taken a turn into classy, subtle pieces that can be matched with other simple pieces to make them stand out.

Modern Cowboy Core Style Explained

One thing I find interesting about the cowboy core moment right now is how much it overlaps with classic American heritage style. Western influences have cycled through fashion for decades, but this latest version feels more refined and wearable. Designers and everyday brands alike are leaning into quality denim, structured leather pieces, and subtle equestrian details instead of full-on costume Western. It makes the trend feel approachable, especially for women who want to stay current without chasing every microtrend.

How Cowboy Core Fits Into Everyday Wardrobes

From what I’ve been seeing both in stores and online lately, the shift is definitely toward understated pieces. Think a great pair of boots with clean lines, a structured leather belt, or a knit with a small horse motif rather than oversized fringe or novelty prints. Those quieter nods to Western style make it easier to integrate into an existing wardrobe, which, honestly, is where most of us live day to day. Some of the brands I think are doing it really well? Free People, Ralph Lauren, Ariat, Carhartt and Tecovas.

I also think this trend resonates because it taps into something timeless. Good denim, leather accessories, and equestrian-inspired details have always had a place in classic style. When you approach cowboy core through that lens, it stops feeling trendy and starts feeling like a natural extension of pieces many of us already own. That’s probably why it’s appealing across age groups. My mom’s reaction to that cardigan is actually a perfect example.

If you’re curious about trying the look, my biggest advice is to start small. A belt, boots, a great denim jacket, or even jewelry with subtle Western influence can add interest without overwhelming an outfit. The goal isn’t to look themed. It’s to add a little texture and personality in a way that still feels like you. My dream is to go to a dude ranch in Montana some day and immerse myself in the cowboy culture. Until then, I’ll settle for one or two pieces as a nod to that look without looking completely out of place in Michigan.

Without further ado, here are some of the equestrian and cowboy pieces and looks I’m loving right now.

My Styling Tips for Cowboy Core

  • Stick to 1–2 Western elements per outfit.
  • Choose quality leather over overly embellished pieces.
  • Avoid stacking fringe, embroidery, and hats all at once.
  • Neutral tones make Western pieces feel more elevated.
  • If you wouldn’t normally wear it, skip it. Trends work best when they feel authentic.

Just remember to have fun with it! It’s meant to be a whole vibe and even if it’s out of your comfort zone, it’s a fun look.
