Playing with Plaid
My childhood was rooted in the 90s culture. I dove headfirst into that pool of culture including a love for grunge, plaid, listening to Pearl Jam on my CD player and big oversized sweaters over overalls. The 90s is a time that I hold near and dear to my heart and when I close my eyes and picture myself and my friends on a Friday night at the movies, plaid instantly jumps to my mind.
If there’s one style truth that never goes out of fashion, it’s this: plaid always comes back, and it always comes back stronger. Think of it as the fashion world’s version of a comfort show: timeless, familiar, and nostalgic, but still surprisingly fresh every time it returns. And this season? I am finding that Plaid is everywhere and my 90’s inner child is here for it! From quiet luxury tailoring to cozy cabin chic, and bold street style to coastal-inspired layers, plaid is everywhere.
Plaid is a story. A mood. A vibe. And in my case it represents my past. Depending on your age, it can remind us of the vintage wool blazers found in our mom’s attic, your Scottish or Irish heritage, grunge-era layering, prep school uniforms, and the kind of autumn energy that makes you want to light a candle and reorganize your entryway.
Whether you lean timeless, trendy, or somewhere in between, plaid is having a moment in 2025, and it’s a moment you’ll want in your closet and in your home.
Why Plaid Is Trending Again in 2025
This isn’t your kitschy holiday plaid comeback. This revival is polished, modern, and backed by major brands from Ralph Lauren and Sézane to Aritzia, J.Crew, and Totême. According to Google Trends, search interest for plaid blazer outfits, tartan blankets, and plaid scarves has risen over 265% in the last 12 months, proving this pattern is more than just seasonal nostalgia. Elle magazine wrote an amazing article all about the best in plaid for 2025 – be sure to check it out! It’s a full-on lifestyle trend. I have some of my other fall favorites in my latest post about the best in fall fashion.
So what’s driving plaid’s comeback?
Quiet luxury goes heritage — Classic patterns feel expensive and intentional
Timeless textures — Think wool, boucle, flannel, brushed cotton
Seasonless styling — Works for fall, holidays, winter, and early spring
Versatility — Dresses, pants, bags, shoes, pillows, throws—plaid does it all
Home décor crossover — Interior designers are layering plaids into coastal homes, modern farmhouses, and tailored city apartments alike
Let’s Talk Style: The Best Ways to Wear Plaid Right Now
There are so many chic ways to bring plaid into your wardrobe without looking like a holiday singing telegram. The key? Mix textures, play with proportions, and stick to a color palette that aligns with your personal style. Here are a few on-trend ideas:
The Classic Plaid Blazer
A slightly oversized plaid blazer is the layering piece of the season. Toss it over a turtleneck, pair it with denim, or wear it with wide-leg trousers for a look that says CEO energy, but make it cozy. Styling tip: Go neutral—taupes, browns, and charcoals give it that expensive, old-money appeal.
Plaid Pants (Yes, You Can Pull Them Off)
Tailored plaid trousers are a chic alternative to denim and look effortless with sneakers or loafers. Plus, they’re secretly comfortable as most come with a touch of stretch. I had a pair I wore in high school during the holidays and I wish, so much, that I had kept them. I believe they were the very first thing I ever bought from Ralph Lauren. Styling tip: Keep your top simple. A fitted black cashmere sweater is all you need.
The Plaid Mini That Isn’t Preppy Overload
Plaid skirts get a bad rap thanks to decades of teen movie styling, but this season they’re refined. Look for longer hemlines or wrap silhouettes. Styling tip: Pair with tall boots and a chunky oversized sweater to balance proportions.
Plaid Accessories
Not ready to fully commit? Start small. Plaid scarves, tote bags, scrunchies, headbands, and even plaid ballet flats are trending hard and feel high-end when done subtly. Styling tip: Pull a color from your accessory and match it in your outfit for cohesion.
Cozy Plaid Shackets
They’re not going anywhere. The plaid shacket is still a thing, and frankly, I’m glad. It’s the perfect casual layering piece for weekends, school pickups, coffee runs, or tailgates. Styling tip: Size up one for that cozy boyfriend-fit look.
Plaid at Home: Elevated, Not Rustic
Plaid has also moved into the home décor space with a decidedly elevated feel. Designers like Amber Lewis, Studio McGee, and Heidi Caillier use plaid to add warmth and heritage charm to modern spaces.
Without further ado, here are some of the plaid pieces I’m loving this fall!

How to Style Plaid Without Looking Messy
Because let’s be honest—too much plaid can go lumberjack real fast. A few rules keep you chic, not chaotic:
- Keep it to 1–2 plaid items per outfit or room
- Pair with solids or gentle texture like cable knit, denim, suede, or leather
- Mix scales: large plaid + small plaid looks intentional
- Stay within a neutral palette so it feels elevated
- Lean into quality materials as cheap plaid can look pretty junky
Plaid is one of those trends that actually earns a spot in your closet (and home) forever. It’s not fast fashion. It’s not gimmicky. It’s a classic that evolves just enough to feel modern while still being timeless. Whether you want to add a single scarf or go all in with a matching suit, there’s a version of plaid for everyone this season.
