I have been a fan of Free People (and CP Shades) for quite some time. My style has always incorporated a touch of the boho look, and I tend to wear loose-fitting, casual clothes. Free People, Anthropologie, with a touch of J.Crew, seems to be my happy medium. Not all of the Free People looks for me (as a 40-something woman, I tend to shy away from their mini dresses and tiny tops), but there are so many Free People options that work for everything from a lazy day at the beach to work-appropriate. Unfortunately, the price points can be a bit much. As much as I love an oversized tee – I most definitely don’t want to pay $90 for one. A piece from Free People here or there is doable. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a ton to find the same look for less. There are numerous Free People lookalikes and dupes available that offer a similar style at a more affordable price. From a dupe for the Hot Shot Onesie to the FP Dolman Jacket to my beloved Free People oversized tee – the lookalikes and dupes out there will keep people guessing if it’s the real deal or not. The Appeal of Free People’s Boho Aesthetic

There’s something about Free People’s aesthetic that always feels effortless – gauzy fabrics, flowy silhouettes, natural tones, and a general sense of coolness. It’s a brand that nails the art of looking undone but intentional, which is why so many of us gravitate toward it as we get older and want to feel put together without feeling overdone.

The brand’s oversized layers, relaxed shapes, and textured details make it easy to transition from errands to dinner, school drop-off to weekend brunch. But the truth is, you don’t need to splurge on every piece to get that same lived-in, artsy look. Many brands, from Amazon, Target, and Walmart to smaller boutiques on Etsy, now offer Free People-inspired clothing that nails the vibe for less.

The Hot Shot Onesie is loved because it’s slouchy, breathable, and perfect for layering. I own this (and, although I don’t own the Free People version, I cannot give a 1:1 comparison) I love love LOVE the Amazon version of the Hot Shot Onsie, and it’s less than half the cost of FP. There are a few different people who make the lookalike – Automet, Anrabess and Lentta. I bought both Automet and Anrabess and I really can’t tell the difference between the two – they are both equally good. (I haven’t purchasred the Lentta version but a friend did and she said it’s great.)

Cozy, boxy, and casually cool, the FP Dolman Quilted Jacket is a popular choice for Fall. I purchased the Quilted Jacket from Amazon and it’s pretty good quality. It JUST got cool enough here in Michigan that I can begin wearing it. It’s a great everyday jacket to throw on for running out to the store or meeting a friend for a quick drink. And I can say that it may look lightweight but I was surprised at how warm it is.

This is a cozy rib knit with a perfectly oversized cut – so easy to throw on over jean shorts or leggings. The dupe is almost $100 less than the FP version so go ahead and spoil yourself and get two!! It’s oversized so you can throw it on over leggings and looks just as cute with jeans or a pencil skirt. (I would not pair this with wide leg jeans, however. It’s fairly roomy and a bigger top and roomy jeans will be too much fabric – so go with something more streamlined in terms of pants.)

People love the Hailee Cardi Sweater Set because it’s soft, slouchy, and totally luxe. The dupe is pretty darn close to the real thing. It comes in a ton of different colors (I’m partial to the black with white stripes). I don’t own this one myself but the reviews all seem to say this is a really good alternative.

The Good Karma leggings are popular because of the flattering fit and the high-rise ribbed texture waist. I cannot recommend the Colorfulkoala leggings enough! I own about 6 pairs in both full length and cropped fit. They have a great side pocket for your phone if you’re out walking or running to the store. I find the high waist has incredible tummy control as well. And at under $30 (when Free People and Lululemon run closer to $70 – $100) you will not be disappointed.

A take on the classic cargo pant – laid back and cool but both the Free People and the version similar to it are super soft and not quiet as structured as a classic cargo pant. I, unfortunately, don’t love the way I look in cargo pants but I love to admire other people who look great in them!

Every closet needs an oversized, easy-breezy tee. I own both of these – the Free People Oversized Tee and the lookalike. The Free People version is a reasonable price point, and I recommend either one of these, and they won’t break the bank. The dupe is also great. It’s a little different as it has a small slit on the sides, which gives the oversized tee a little more movement than the FP version.

Made for comfort, easy living, and a casual look, the oversized pullover is perfect for those fall days. The dupe washes really well and is quite warm. I do think the lookalike is a bit heavier material than the Free People version.

Quilted bags are everywhere right now. Chic but laid-back – I know that MZ Wallace (and I have a post about MZ Wallace dupes!) and the Free People quilted bags are super popular. But there are several really good alternatives that are just as great for a better price point.

Barrel jeans seem to be the hot, hot, hot look right now. I personally feel I cannot pull them off… but anytime I see them on someone else I always admire how cute they look. These wide-leg jeans are super comfortable and have a hip “cool girl” vibe.

How to Get the Free People Look for Less

If you want that same boho-meets-luxe feel without the splurge, focus on textures and proportions rather than labels. Here’s how to recreate the vibe:

1. Go Oversized, But Not Sloppy: Choose relaxed fits that skim the body without drowning it. A slouchy tunic or boyfriend-fit tee works beautifully.
2. Play With Natural Fabrics: Cotton, linen, gauze, and knits all give that same laid-back, artisanal feel Free People is known for.
3. Layer Like a Pro: Think lightweight cardigans, drapey jackets, or open vests over tanks and dresses. It’s the easiest way to add depth to your outfit.

My Experience Shopping Dupes

I’ve personally tested dozens of Free People lookalikes (as mentioned above), some better than others. What surprised me most is how almost-identical many are once you try them on. The similar Hot Shot Onesie I found on Amazon feels nearly the same fabric weight and drape as the original. The Dolman jacket alternative has that same perfectly oversized silhouette – so many practically indistinguishable at one-third to half the price.

The trick is paying attention to fit reviews and fabric descriptions. Many dupes use the same blend (like cotton/spandex or rayon/polyester) and are made by the same overseas manufacturers that supply big brands. (Sort of like when I learned that a lot grocery store brands will sell their product to the store’s brand and the store brand is the exact same but listed for less because it doesn’t have the big brand logo! GAH!)
