The Rise Of Cottagecore Bags

Once upon a time (a few years ago, to be exact), the internet fell in love with a dreamy aesthetic rooted in romantic simplicity: think gingham dresses, linen aprons, fresh-baked sourdough, and flower-picking in sun-dappled meadows. Thus, cottagecore was born. It’s a lifestyle trend, yes, but also a fashion movement that continues to influence everything from TikTok to high fashion, and this summer, it’s all about the cottagecore bag.

What Is Cottagecore, Anyway?

Cottagecore is a wistful nod to an easy breezy life, where comfort, slowness, and natural beauty reign supreme. It celebrates the idea of retreating to the countryside and living a romanticized, rustic life filled with wildflowers, vintage treasures, and homemade everything. Think Beatrix Potter meets Anthropologie. I became aware of the cottagecore trend when I was reading an article about it a couple of years ago, and it has most definitely made its way into my life through both home decor purchases and the influx of linen into my closet.

The aesthetic first gained momentum during the early days of the pandemic, when many of us craved a softer, slower world. It offered an escape from screen time, hustle culture, and hard edges. And while we may have traded our sourdough starters for summer travel plans, the cottagecore vibe is still very much alive, especially in our wardrobes.

Enter: The Cottagecore Bag

Cottagecore bags are the whimsical, wearable expression of the trend. These aren’t your typical structured totes or flashy logos (I am personally NOT a fan of carrying bags steeped in logos. Perhaps my lean toward cottagecore is because of its simplistic, non-showy vibe). Instead, cottagecore bags lean into a more natural, artisanal, and often vintage-inspired aesthetic. In my humble opinion, here’s what makes a bag cottagecore:

  • Woven textures: Straw, raffia, rattan, or macramé are go-to materials.
  • Floral embroidery or patchwork: Picture delicate stitching, ditsy florals, or even crocheted blooms.
  • Pastel hues or earthy tones: Sage greens, dusty pinks, creamy whites, and buttery yellows.
  • Shapes with charm: Bucket bags, market totes, and vintage-style crossbodies with wooden handles or beaded details.
  • Handmade or heirloom vibes: Whether it’s an Etsy find or a flea-market treasure, the bag should feel like it has a story.
  • Canvas Simplicity: From market totes to a small canvas tote making its way to your al fresco dinner date, the simplicity and neutrality of canvas make it a perfect addition to this trend.

Why Cottagecore Bags Are the It Bags of Summer

Cottagecore bags are the perfect companion for sun-drenched summer days. They’re breezy, light, and effortlessly stylish, making them ideal for everything from farmer’s markets to picnics to vacations in small coastal towns. But beyond their beauty, they feel good to wear.

There’s a sense of nostalgia and whimsy wrapped up in each one, like you’re stepping into a Jane Austen novel but still managing to make it to brunch. Additionally, their handmade, often sustainable appeal aligns perfectly with the growing interest in slow fashion and conscious shopping.

Even major brands and retailers have jumped on board, with Anthropologie, Free People, Mango, and Quince all offering gorgeous options that blend countryside charm with city-ready versatility. (Pssst – Etsy also has fantastic handmade options, and it’s always great to support small business artisans! I included a few Etsy options below) Below are some of the cottagecore bags making my list this summer.
