The Spring Sweaters You Need This Year
As I write this, I’m staring at freshly fallen snow so talking about lightweight spring sweaters feels like I’m jumping the gun a bit. However, spring is knocking on our door! The other day on my walk, I saw one single pretty little crocus in someone’s yard and it instantly made me smile. So suffice it to say, as much as I love winter, I am 100% ready for spring.

Knowing what to wear in the spring can be tricky due to the fickle weather (at least what we have here in the midwest!). Some days call for a t-shirt and some days call jeans and your favorite sweater. I’m big on cardigans in the spring but I’ve also founds quite a few lightweight pullover sweaters that I’m really loving this spring. My personal favorite? The rollneck sweater from J.Crew. It brings me right back to the 90s. Another 80s and 90s trend that I’m secretly thrilled to see pop back up? Jelly shoes!
How I Chose Sweaters for Spring
I definitely pack away the heavier wool and turtleneck sweaters toward the end of March and replace them with lighterweight options for spring. When looking for spring sweaters, I usually keep the following in mind:
- Lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton, linen-cotton blends, light merino wool and cashmere blends
- A lighter knit as spring sweaters should feel airy and not as bulky. Be on the lookout for “featherweight” in the description
- The potential for layering, meaning: a sweater you can easily throw over your shoulders without it being too thick, one that you can throw over a dress or tank and easily put it on/take it off for varying weather changes.
- Softer colors can instantly create a spring vibe. I tend towards soft neutrals like oatmeal, light gray and tans but pastels and stripes are perfect for spring as well.
- I go for a slightly relaxed fit for spring sweaters. I don’t want anything to feel too boxy or thick as I like that easy relaxed feel as the months get warmer.
