The Best Mahjong Gifts for Women Who Can’t Stop Playing

I feel like suddenly everyone is playing Mahjong, myself included. I have definitely reached the age where someone I know is either learning to play Mahjong, trying to get a regular group together, or already has a standing game every week that absolutely cannot be interfered with. I first learned to play a couple of years ago and while I haven’t played in a while, I’d really like to get back into it. A friend of mine recently hired someone to come in and teach her and 7 friends to learn in her home and I’m getting ready to organize a group of my own to do the same. Getting a bunch of women together to play sort of reminds me of the Bridge parties my grandma would host.

It seems when someone gets into Mahjong, it becomes a whole thing. There are the pretty tiles. The mats. The racks. The bags. The little accessories you didn’t know existed until you started playing and suddenly very much need. I saw a Mahjong table that literally mixes the tiles for you and organizes them to take some of the legwork off the players (but the table does NOT come cheap! A gal can dream…)

When people get that excited about a game or an interest, it make super fun (and easy) to come up with gifts for them. And there are some really fun gifts for Mahjong fans.

I’ve rounded up ideas that range from inexpensive little finds to beautiful Mahjong accessories and a few splurge-worthy gifts for the person who has become completely obsessed with the game.

A Beautiful Mahjong Tile Set

Let’s start with the obvious one. If she’s relatively new to Mahjong and doesn’t have her own set yet, this is the big gift. And Mahjong sets have gotten so much prettier. You can find acrylic tiles in gorgeous colors and patterns that are worlds away from the basic game sets you might remember. I’d look for something that comes with everything she actually needs to play and, preferably, a good case for storing it all. Something to note: be sure you know which version of Mahjong she plays (American or Chinese) as that makes a difference in what kind of set you buy.

A Mahjong Mat

This is one of those things you don’t necessarily know you need until you start playing regularly. A Mahjong mat gives the tiles a softer surface, protects the table underneath and cuts down on some of the clacking and sliding around. There are also some really beautiful patterned versions now, which makes this a particularly good gift if she already owns the basics. I have a friend who hosts regular games and keeps 4 different mats in all different patterns and colors and matches each table with a pretty tablecloth underneath and matching tiles. But that’s obviously a hardcore Mahj fan!

Mahjong Racks

If she’s already got the tiles, upgrade the rest of her setup. Personalized or monogrammed Mahjong racks feel special without being one of those personalized gifts that ultimately sits in a drawer somewhere. I especially like the acrylic versions. They’re useful, but they also make the whole table look a little more pulled together.

A Mahjong Tote Bag

Once you’re regularly taking your tiles, racks and accessories to someone else’s house, you quickly realize that Mahjong requires quite a bit of stuff. A sturdy Mahjong tote or carryall is one of the most practical gifts on this list. There are some really cute quilted, canvas and embroidered options, including personalized bags, that look much better than hauling everything around in whatever reusable tote happened to be sitting by the door.

A Mahj Tile Bag

For a smaller personalized Mahjong gift, I love a monogrammed tile bag or zippered pouch. It’s the sort of thing that feels thoughtful but is still genuinely useful, particularly for someone who takes her set to weekly games.

A Mahjong Card Holder or Line Reader

This falls squarely into the category of little-things-Mahjong-players-will understand-immediately. Card holders keep the annual card propped up and easier to read during a game, while line readers help isolate the particular line you’re studying. A Mahjong-Themed Cocktail Napkin Set

Not everything has to be actual game equipment. Mahjong cocktail napkins are fun for the person who regularly hosts her group, especially if she loves setting out drinks and snacks almost as much as she loves playing. This is also an easy little gift if you’re invited to a Mahjong night and don’t want to show up empty-handed.

A Mahjong Serving Tray or Platter

For the friend whose Mahjong night involves an actual spread, a Mahjong-themed tray or platter is both cute and useful. I’d skip anything overly novelty-looking and look for something chinoiserie-inspired, blue and white, or subtly patterned with tiles. It will feel much more like something she’d leave out even when she’s not hosting a game.

Mahjong Coasters

Same idea, smaller price tag. A pretty set of Mahjong coasters makes an easy gift under $25 and works particularly well for someone who already owns all the actual game accessories.

A Mahjong Tumbler Or Wine Glasses

If your Mahjong friend always arrives with a giant water bottle or tumbler in hand, this is an easy one. There are personalized versions, understated tile designs and, of course, plenty of cheekier sayings if that’s more her personality.

A Mahjong Sweatshirt

I generally think hobby-themed clothing can go one of two ways. Very cute. Or very cheesy. For Mahjong, I’d look for something fairly simple: a small embroidered tile, “Mahj,” a vintage-looking Mahjong Social Club graphic, or something that doesn’t immediately scream novelty sweatshirt.

A Mahjong Baseball Hat

Same rules apply here. A simple embroidered Mahjong hat is fun for the friend who is truly all in, particularly if your group travels together or has somehow reached the matching-hats stage of friendship. No judgment. I support it.

A Travel Mahjong Set

For the woman who will absolutely suggest Mahjong on a girls’ weekend, family vacation or lake trip, a compact travel set is a fantastic gift. Look for something genuinely portable rather than simply a regular set in a slightly smaller box.

A Mahjong Ornament

This is one of my favorite small Christmas gifts for Mahjong lovers because it doesn’t require knowing anything about the person’s game setup. Personalized tile ornaments are especially cute if you know her initials, nickname or Mahjong group’s name.

What Do You Give Someone Who Loves Mahjong?

The easiest rule is to figure out how serious of a player she is first. If she’s just learning, a beautiful Mahjong set, beginner’s book or current card can help her get started. If she’s already playing every week, I’d skip the basic equipment unless you know exactly what she wants. Go for something that upgrades what she already owns: a beautiful mat, personalized racks, a tile bag, card holder or dedicated Mahjong tote.

And if she’s the person who already owns every Mahjong accessory known to man? That’s when I’d lean into something fun for game night itself: cocktail napkins, a serving piece, sweatshirt, ornament or personalized gift. Because apparently Mahjong isn’t just a game anymore. It’s a hobby with accessories. and, frankly, those are the best kind.
