Versatile Ottomans That Double as Coffee Tables

In any comfy living space, especially if you have kids, oversized ottomans that double as coffee tables are a no-brainer. When we first moved into our house when our son was not even one, we had an interior designer come in to give us some advice on how to style our family room, the main room we would be spending a majority of our time. She had suggested a large leather ottoman as our coffee table and remember her saying “Your son can run his toy cars over it and as he learns to walk there is no chance of him cracking his head on hard edges, glass or wood.
Huh, that never occurred to me before that! We ended up getting an ostrich leather oversized ottoman and still have it to this day! It’s held up beautifully over the last decade. And while our son is well past the age of needing to worry about banging about on sharp edges of traditional coffee tables, we have opted to keep it. On movie night we can all use it to put our feet up which makes everything that more cozy. We have a pretty oversized woven tray sitting on top of it that holds everything from magazines to vases of flowers.

I like that ottoman coffee tables can pull that double duty! I also feel like they make a space look a little more casual and lived-in than a glass or wood coffee table. They work best in the rooms you’re really living in on the daily. We even use it as extra seating if we’re hosting quite a few people. My son and his friends will sit on it to play their video games and some even come with built in storage which makes it great for storing toys and throw blankets. And if you have a smaller space, fear not! There are options that are not oversized and work in smaller rooms.

Why an Ottoman Coffee Table Just Makes Sense
I love a beautiful coffee table, but there’s something to be said for a piece of furniture that can do more than one job. An ottoman coffee table gives you a place to kick up your feet, set down a tray, stack a few favorite books and, depending on the style, even sneak in a little extra storage. It also softens a living room in a way that a traditional wood or stone coffee table sometimes can’t.
If you’re shopping for one, I’d pay attention to scale first. You want something substantial enough to anchor your seating area without overwhelming it. From there, think about how you’ll actually use it. Upholstered styles are great for lounging, storage ottomans earn their keep in family rooms, and a large tray can turn almost any ottoman into a practical spot for drinks or snacks.
