Fall Home Decor Ideas
My son went back to school a couple of weeks ago. I was feeling bittersweet as it’s his last year in elementary, and I can’t get over how fast time is going. However, we lost track of time his first morning back and rushed to get our first day pictures as we watched the bus turn the corner. Needless to say, rushing through the pictures and quickly getting him on the bus was a distraction I think I badly needed. I couldn’t stand there and ruminate about how it felt like I just put him on the bus for the first time five years ago or I would have gone into a tailspin about how fast time is going. Perhaps the universe created that divine intervention so that I didn’t get too sappy and emo about his going off to his last year in the little kids’ school. However, I will say once he got on that bus, just like that, my mind turned to all things autumn. It’s amazing how quickly we can bounce from one feeling to another!

It’s a crisp day here in Michigan (a chilly 68 after weeks of full sun and 95-degree days). Seeing that school bus turn the corner on an early September morning, most definitely means we are shifting into one of my favorite times of year – autumn!
I don’t know about you, but I like to swap out some of my summer home decor for Autumn and fall home decor – throw pillows in warm browns and deep oranges, a new front door wreath made of faux sunflowers and wheat grass, thicker throw blankets, and apple-scented candles.
I don’t like to spend a ton on changing seasonal decor (unless it’s an actual holiday like Halloween or Christmas), but I do like little pops of decor here and there that represent the new season we are entering. This can be done on a budget for the most part, and most of what I’m recommending below are things I find that are the best bang for your buck (with one or two splurges). Setting up your home to represent the new season is easy with little touches all around.

Here are a few thought starters for what can be easily swapped from your normal home decor or to swap your summer decor for autumn:
- Floral & Fresh Candles to Pumpkin Spice and Apple
- Cotton Throws to Chunky Knit Blankets
- Greenery to Dried Eucalyptus and Wheat Stems
- Bright Colorful Art to Moody Landscapes
- Sleek Decor to Rustic Wood & Brass Accents
- Light Sheer Curtains to Cozy Plaid/Heavier Fabrics
- Cotton & Linen Throw Pillows to Velvet, Suede, Plaid in Warm Tones
- Crisp White Lamp Shades to Rattan or Dark Woven Textures
- Seashells & Books on Coffee Tables to Wood Bowls of Pinecones or Small Pumpkins
- Floral or Summer Greeting Doormats to Leaf or Sunflower Patterns
And with that, here are a few items I currently own or have in my cart. I’m excited to start changing some of my home decor to create an autumn wonderland. Keep in mind, I’m tailoring much of this to autumn and fall – be on the lookout for a halloween decor post shortly! Or you can check out my post about my favorite halloween decor from Amazon that is all under $35!
