The Fall 2026 Color Palette Everyone’s Copying (Burgundy, Plum & Mustard) – And How To Actually Use It

I just finished a post about Occasional couches (read it here) and I was so excited to see super rich, dramatic color options for these couches. I love it and would welcome bringing more of it into my home but my entire house is almost entirely made up of creams, blues and greens. So off to the research I went! I wanted to figure out intentional ways to bring colors like burgundy, plum and mustard into my space without feeling like it doesn’t flow. The trend this fall veers away from years past that dove into washed-out terracotta and pumpking colors but it can also feel a little daunting incorporating these moody jewel-tone colors into your space. But I promise you, it’s a lot easier than you think.

What the Fall 2026 Palette Actually Looks Like

For a long time, homes were being decorated in gray. Gray wood flooring, gray walls, gray furniture. And if it wasn’t gray, it was stark whites and heavily leaned into a minimalist vibe. But things are shifting away from that. This fall, I am seeing so many interior designers and design publications embrace this moodier and more sophisticated color pallete that includes chocolate brown, burgundy, mustard, oxblood and, my personal favorite, plum. Color drenching all the way!

If you really want to go for it and try out painting a room in one of these colors, (I used Sherwin Williams Sable (SW 6083) for our bedroom which is a beautiful chocolate brown), I would recommend the following:

  • Sherwin-Williams Carriage Door (deep burgundy)
  • Benjamin Moore Barista (burgundy)
  • Benjamin Moore Silhouette (charcoal-espresso brown AND their color of the year!)
  • Glidden Warm Mahogohney (their color of the year)
  • Behr Celebration (mustard)
  • Graham & Brown Divine Damson (plum)

It’s worth noting that three different major paint brands independently named a moody, saturated color as their color of the year. That right there is worth noting just how much these colors are super on-trend as we move into 2027.

How to Try It Without Repainting a Single Wall

If you’re like me, your head is spinning as you try to figure out how to incorporate these colors without completely revamping a room. Yes, painting a room can give it a completely new vibe, but it also takes time and is a fairly big jump if you’re going from something super neutral like gray or white. If painting isn’t on your to-do list…well, guess what? It’s possible to bring these colors into your space on a smaller scale. You don’t need to replace your furniture or buy all new decor to bring these jewel tones into your home. A few small, thoughtful touches will do it. Here’s where to start:

Throw Pillows

This is the easiest, lowest-commitment entry point, hands down. A couple of burgundy or plum velvet pillows on a neutral sofa instantly bring in the trend, and if you change your mind by spring, they’re the easiest thing in the house to swap out. Bolster Pillows are another good option if you want to feel a little ahead of the curve as many designers are calling these the new throw pillow this season. Pair one with your existing pillows on a bed or sofa for an instantly more elevated, “put-together” look.

Dining Accessories

If your dining room feels like the biggest commitment, start here instead. A burgundy or mustard runner on your existing table transforms it for fall dinners without touching a single wall. In the kitchen, beautiful placemats on your kitchen table or even a pretty pitcher set out as decoration will make a difference in your space.

One Accent Piece

A ceramic vase, a stack of books, or even a candle in one of these tones on a shelf or coffee table adds just enough color to feel intentional, without overwhelming the room. I often swap out accent pieces in new seasons (if you want to bookmark it, I published a post about my favorite spring decor swaps) and find it’s the simplest (and usually most affordable) way to change up the look of a room. A Throw Blanket

Draped over the back of a chair or the arm of a sofa, a plum or oxblood throw is one of the coziest (and easiest) ways to bring in the palette for fall. A Single Accent Chair or Ottoman (if you’re ready to commit a little more)

This is the next step up if you find you love the look and want more than an accent, but it’s still far less commitment than a full room redo. In our bedroom I started with painting it chocolate brown. Several months later I added dramatic full-length curtains with a beautiful moody pattern. Next, I added a vintage-inspired brass mirror as brass pairs really well with jewel tones. So don’t ever feel like you need to re-haul a room all at the same time. You can take it slowly which also allows you to be more intentional about what you’re truly want in your space.

However you choose to bring these colors into your home this fall, my hope is that it feels like YOU… cozy, a little moody, a lot lovely. Start small with one pillow or one candle, and see how it feels before you commit to more. That’s really all decorating for the seasons should be: low pressure, high reward.
