Elevated Tailgate Outfits For Women Over 40
Can we talk about the tailgate uniform for a second? Because somewhere along the way it became: jersey, or head-to-toe school colors, or nothing…like there’s no third option. I love a good football Saturday as much as anyone (Michigan State through and through), but I feel like I’m of an age (over 40) where I don’t want to wear the oversized hoodies that Gen Z is currently coveting, and I’m also not buying a whole new wardrobe in green and white just because that’s apparently the assignment now.

So I started to pull together tailgate outfits that allow me to support my favorite team, but also let me keep things looking…. a bit more grown up.
The whole idea is: dress like yourself first, fan second. One small nod to the team; everything else is just good clothes. Neutral, layered, built for comfort whilst standing around in a parking lot for four hours, but also keeps you looking pulled together and supportive of your alma mater or favorite pro team.
The Base Layers Nobody Talks About
Start with what you’d wear anyway. Not “game day appropriate,” just, clothes. A good pair of jeans, straight or slightly relaxed, something with actual room to move because you will be standing, walking and sitting at various points during the day. Tuck in a simple tee or a fitted long sleeve, something in cream, camel, black, olive. Boring on purpose. This is the part that does NOT need to say anything about your allegiance.
Then layer. This is where it gets good, honestly. A quilted vest over the tee. Or a flannel shirt-jacket, unbuttoned, sleeves pushed up if it’s warm enough, buttoned all the way if it’s not. If you own a barn coat, this is its whole season, right here.

Where The Nod To Your Team Actually Shows Up
One thing. That’s the rule I gave myself. One thing says “I have a team,” and it’s small enough that if you left the tailgate and walked straight into a coffee shop, nobody would clock it as a costume. If I’m feeling extra crazy, I will pair two small items like earrings and colorful sneakers. But only ONE piece at the maximum that has the team’s logo or name.
Some options, ranked by how much I’ve actually worn them:
- A scarf in your team color, knotted loosely, not perfectly (I like mine a little undone)
- Small stud or hoop earrings in the team color or logo, nothing bigger than a quarter
- A belt with a subtle color detail, if your jeans situation calls for a belt
- Nail color, if you’re someone who paints your nails anyway
- A single bracelet or ring, something you’d wear regardless
That’s genuinely it. Pick the one that feels most like something you’d already own. Feel free to pair two of these things since they are all subtle
Footwear, because this matters more than anything else on this list
Boots and sneakers are my go-to. I’m not going to pretend there’s a debate here. I LOVE to wear a pair of Adidas Sambas in green and white and that’s my nod to Michigan State on tailgate days. Note: this is not the day for new shoes. You will be on your feet more than you think, and cute-but-stiff boots turn into a real problem around hour two. I just generally avoid sandals, unless they are Birkenstocks, because when you’re standing on your feet for a majority of the day, you need good support.

Three temperatures, same formula
Early season, still hot: swap the flannel layer for a lightweight linen or cotton overshirt, left open. Ankle boots or sneakers. Sunglasses doing a lot of the “outfit” work here, honestly. An outfit I’d rock is shown below (for purposes of my team allegiance, I’ll be sticking with green and white examples of what I’d wear in all of these outfit combos).

Mid-fall, that in-between weather nobody dresses for correctly: the quilted vest over a long sleeve tee, jeans, ankle boots. This is the one I wear most, because it’s the one that actually matches how most fall Saturdays feel.

1. Long Sleeve Tee | 2. Gold Hoops | 3. Quilted Vest | 4. Denim Trousers | 5. Lug Sole Boots
Late season, night games, real cold: a barn coat, fully buttoned, over a chunky sweater instead of a tee. Taller boots. And this is the one time I’ll say bring a blanket that happens to be in your team color. Because that’s an accessory that is genuinely useful.

1. Fisherman Sweater | 2. Beanie | 3. Barn Coat | 4. Barrel Jeans | 5. Shearling Boots
I think what I like most about building it this way is that none of it goes to waste after the season ends. The vest, the boots, the flannel — that’s just my closet in October, tailgate or not. The only thing that’s tailgate-specific is one small detail I could take off in the car if I wanted to.
But… if you’re looking for some fun game-day clothing ideas, there are more obvious ways to dress in “theme” for tailgates, if you’re so inclined. I’ve included a few pieces below that would also work as you build out your fall Saturday outfits. Remember that you can incorporate color into your outfit through accessories like headbands and earrings to generic football themed tops.
Remember to just have fun with it, wear layers, and YAY SPORTS! No matter what you show up in, I have no doubt you’ll look stylish, adorable and perfectly perfect.
