The Chic Summer Style Basics Every Woman Over 40 Needs

It’s the last week of school, the weather has been consistently sunny and 80 degrees for the last week, and I have realized I need to do a massive overhaul on my summer wardrobe. Other than buying a few things here or there each summer, I have been rotating the same mix of clothing since the pandemic (eek!). I am sick of everything hanging in that sad little space. Not to mention, I feel like I’ve hit that just-out-of-style window for a lot of what I bought all those years ago. On top of it? I was in my late 30s the last time I truly went summer shopping and now that I’m into my 40s, it’s time for an overhaul. However, I had no idea where to start. What am I truly supposed to wear now? How can I look chic and put together without looking like I tried too hard? All roads led to getting the essential basics and building from there. I got busy and got to work researching exactly what I’d need to create a wardrobe of sleek summer style basics that will also allow my personality to come through.

summer wardrobe basics for women over 40

What I found is that best summer style basics for women over 40 seem to include linen trousers, tailored wide-strap tank tops, lightweight summer sweaters, and versatile leather slide sandals. By building a capsule wardrobe around these high-quality foundation pieces, you can stay chic and comfortable without relying on ultra-trendy, youthful silhouettes.

The other week, I did the dreaded seasonal closet swap (read more about that here). It’s when I noticed those small jean shorts that I’ve been holding on to since 2005 are just no longer something I want to wear. (And why do we hang on to things we know we will never wear again??) I went scorched earth on my closet and was left with a few dresses, a pair of linen pants and a few basic button downs and I’m going to begin the process of filling my closet with those summer style basics.

When we hit our late thirties and cross into our forties, something shifts in our brains. We want to look stylish, trendy, and pulled together but we also don’t want to look like we are 25 years old and heading to a music festival in cropped tops and tiny shorts. (And trust me, admitting that my body and lifestyle have changed is not something that comes easily to me.)

We are women wearing 1,000 different hats at any time of day. We are running from the office to the grocery store, sitting on the sidelines of our kids’ games, and trying to squeeze in a nice dinner out with our partners. We need clothes that work as hard as we do. That means building a wardrobe around high-quality summer basics. Today, I am sharing exactly what I personally would like in my to look effortlessly chic, stay cool in the heat, and feel completely confident. I think it translates well to what any woman over 40 might want, too.

Why should women over 40 build a wardrobe around summer basics?

I used to be the queen of impulse buying trendy summer pieces that I wore exactly once (okay, maybe a couple of times). I am at the point where I’d rather invest in some really nice quality pieces that won’t make me want to roll my eyes every time I open my closet than just put four $25 dresses from Amazon into my cart.

Basics should be the base of what an outfit can be built around. When you invest in quiet luxury staples, think a beautifully cut white linen button-down or a perfectly tailored pair of lightweight trousers, you eliminate the daily panic of having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. These foundation pieces mix and match beautifully. They allow you to add personality with your accessories, rather than relying on a loud, trendy garment that will be out of style by next August. Sure, I do buy one or two trendy things each season but it’s no longer the basis of my wardrobe.

What are the essential summer style necessities every woman needs?

If you are starting from scratch, or just doing a ruthless purge of your current closet, here are the absolute non-negotiables I have (or am in the process of adding) in my own summer rotation.

Summer Tops and Tank Tops

Let’s talk about the workhorses of your closet: tops. I rely heavily on ribbed cotton tank tops with wide straps. Why wide straps? Because finding a strapless bra that doesn’t feel like a medieval torture device is nearly impossible, wide straps let you wear your regular, comfortable bra without the straps showing. I also swear by button-down shirts made of 100% organic cotton or linen, and I go for neutrals like white, navy, and tan. A good button down can be worn so many different ways – over jeans, open over a dress, paired with shorts….you name it. And don’t underestimate the power of a simple soft t-shirt. Tees are where I splurge a little. A high-quality t-shirt is worth its price and it might be the hardest working summer style staple.

What are the best summer pants to wear instead of shorts?

I know it seems odd to suggest long pants for summer, but hear me out! A pair of wide-leg linen trousers is actually cooler and more breathable than tight denim shorts. I have never been a fan of my legs as they are not lovely and slim so shorts really have never been my thing so I’ve become a bit of an expert in summer pants. I tend towards cropped pants to show off whatever sandals I’m wearing and it just looks a little more summery than a full leg pant. But I also like full leg especially for the office. Lightweight trousers look incredibly chic paired with a simple tee or tank and instantly give you that “I summer in the Hamptons” vibe. (Hey, if you DO summer in the Hamptons… even better!)

Why do you need a summer sweater?

If you have ever walked into a freezing grocery store or an over-air-conditioned office building in July, you know exactly why you need a summer sweater. A lightweight, open-knit cotton or cashmere wrap sweater is essential. I keep a neutral-colored cardigan in my tote bag at all times. It adds a beautiful layer of texture to a simple outfit and keeps the goosebumps at bay. Tie it around your shoulders if you’re out and about and not yet ready to wear it. A couple of other staples for those cool nights or mornings are a cropped jean jacket or oversized blazer in a lightweight fabric.

What are the best summer shoes and sandals?

Comfort is king, but we don’t have to sacrifice style just because we are over 40. I no longer wear ANY sort of heel in the summer (I actually avoid it year-round if I can). A classic pair of leather slide sandals in a rich brown or black will take you everywhere. They look polished and refined. I also always keep a pair of pristine white leather sneakers in my closet for days when I am on my feet running errands. And I’m not afraid of a wedge or platform sandal to give me a little extra height (I’m just under 5’4). Wedges can easily dress up any outfit without feeling like you’re in heels. You don’t have to break the bank for stylish summer footwear. I just published a piece on some of my favorite designer-inspired sandals that you can find for a steal on Amazon (linked here).

Summer Dresses Are Your Best Friend

I wear way more dresses in my 40s than I ever did in my 20s or 30s. I really like the ease of a simple dress in the summer. I don’t have to think about what to pair with it, they can just as easily be appropriate for a grocery store run or brunch with girlfriends. Sometimes where I stumble is how best to pair pants and tops and on mornings when I don’t want to think, I throw on a dress. Simple and understated is best as you can then easily style it for whatever is going on that day or evening. If patterns or bold colors are your thing, go for it! We should be dressing for how things make us feel, not because we want to impress someone else. All that said, I tend to stick with neutrals as it’s my preference and let my accessories do the talking. Linen is my go-to but I also just posted on article on some of the best packable travel dresses that won’t wrinkle or require steaming before you throw it on.

What accessories complete a summer basics wardrobe?

Accessories are where you can have a little fun. A packable straw hat is a must for sun protection (because we are religiously applying SPF these days, right?). For jewelry, I lean into quiet luxury with a pair of medium-sized gold hoop earrings and a simple gold chains. It’s enough to make you look finished without feeling weighed down in the heat. Bags and sunglasses are another great way to add your own unique personality to any outfit. I am a dedicated fan of the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer but something as simple as oversized sunglasses and a woven handbag can completely change the look of a simple outfit. (And if woven handbags are your thing, you might be interested in my post about the best woven and straw handbags for summer!) Don’t be afraid to invest in a few quality accessories. I personally splurge on sunglasses because they are almost always on my face when I’m outside and your face IS the first thing people see about you. (I’m also super hard on my sunglasses and I have discovered when you spend a bit more, they tend to last longer.) But at the same time, I’m perfectly happy carrying a $25 woven tote to the farmer’s market.

Consider A Color Palate When Creating a Capsule Summer Wardrobe

One of the easiest ways to make a capsule wardrobe feel effortless is to build it around a consistent color palette. Your pieces don’t need to match exactly, but choosing a handful of colors that naturally complement each other makes getting dressed much simpler.

You might gravitate toward classic combinations like navy, white, and soft pink, or prefer warmer shades such as olive, cream, camel, and terracotta. Having a general color direction helps prevent impulse purchases and ensures new additions work with what you already own. Like I said previously, I am not someone that feels like myself in a ton of patterns and loud colors. But if that’s your thing, go for it! Just remember to base everything in a loose color scheme so you can make your pieces work harder when you want to mix-and-match.

There is something to be said for the value in neutrals. Timeless shades like black, white, beige, gray, and camel create a polished foundation that can be styled countless ways. By mixing textures, fabrics, and silhouettes, even the simplest neutral wardrobe can feel elevated, modern, and anything but boring.

A Few Questions About Summer Style Basics for Women Over 40

What fabrics are best in the summer heat?

Always look for natural, breathable fibers. 100% cotton, linen, silk, and bamboo blends are the best choices for staying cool and avoiding sweat stains. Avoid polyester and heavy synthetics, which trap heat and moisture against your skin.

Can women over 40 still wear shorts in the summer?

Hells Yes! I just choose not to, lol. If you want to wear shorts, look for tailored options with a 5-inch to 7-inch inseam. Chino shorts, linen blend shorts, or slightly relaxed denim bermuda shorts offer great coverage while keeping you cool and looking sophisticated.

What defines a successful summer capsule wardrobe?

First things first, you craft it based on your own style. Don’t just go buying classic and refined pieces if you’re more of a boho kind of gal. You shouldn’t stick yourself in structured chinos if flowy linen pants are more your thing. But a successful summer capusule wardrobe means your being strategic and intentional in what you buy. Take a look at what you already have and what you need and map out what you’re looking for and start your research. Consider your budget and start looking for “leather slide sandals” and write down your top three. Once you have decided what you want, I like to print out images of everything and create a sort of vision board to see how things can mix-and-match.

When shopping for those key summer basics, what should I consider?

I like to ask myself a few questions before I purchase something, especially if it’s piece I’m willing to pay a bit more for:
1. Does this feel like me? Or does it feel like I’m trying to fit myself into a certain look that doesn’t feel 100% comfortable? Because if you are buying something because you think it’s something you SHOULD wear but don’t necessarily like (like me and shorts), you will never end up wearing it and it will collect dust in your closet.
2. Will I wear this at least 8 times over the course of a summer? (That’s really only 2x a month if you think about it). If the answers is yes, go for it. If it’s something you can only see yourself wearing a handful of times, it’s not a basic that will be a part of your summer capsule wardrobe.
3. Can I mix-and-match this with other pieces I already own? You want to consider what’s already in your closet. Unless your starting from scratch, inventory your own closet first and add pieces that will complement what you already own.

Ready to transform your closet?

Getting dressed in the summer doesn’t have to be a source of stress. By investing in a few key basics, you can build a wardrobe that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and undeniably chic. Give yourself permission to let go of the clothes that no longer serve you (I certainly did and I haven’t looked back), and embrace the pieces that make you feel amazing right now.

Now go enjoy that sunshine.
