Functional and Fashionable Sneakers for Summer Travel
I belong to a social media group where it’s a large group of women who share everything from advice about skincare and supplements to vacation recommendations. I love it because it’s like the anti-gatekeeping group. These are women who support each other and share all their life hacks in order to help each other live their best lives, which is essentially the entire intent of my blog! I’ve never understood gatekeeping and I certainly have never understood women who are not champions of other women. If we don’t have each other’s backs, then who?

All of that to say, one of the women posted that she needed some advice on functional and comfortable sneakers for a trip to Europe this summer. A few women chimed in but it seemed to be the same suggestions – Adidas, New Balance and On Clouds. On Clouds for Europe? Really? It’s been a minute since I crossed the pond but I can’t shake something I’ve always heard about American tourists… that they are easily identifiable by their practical (and ugly) sneakers. The women in this private social media group are usually more on the ball than this. They are trendy, stylish, mothers/daughters/wives/partners/caretakers who like nice things but also want to live their lives in comfort. Why were there not more recommendations? Maybe it was on off day and not a lot of people were checking their feed. Either way, it got me wanting to research and find some of the best stylish but functional and comfortable sneakers for summer trips – especially for Europe.
The brands that seem to pop up the most? Yes, Adidas, New Balance and OnClouds but also Vionics, Vejas and a myriad of mesh sneakers. There IS a way to look stylish on vacation without risking aching feet and blisters by the end of the day.
What to Look for in Functional, Comfortable Stylish Summer Sneakers
Before I could begin to pull together a round-up of the best functional yet stylish sneakers for summer trips and vacations, I had to figure out what actually make these sneakers comfortable. The stylish part is easy to nail down.
First things first, do not pack a pair sneakers (or any shoes, really) without wearing them pretty regularly for at least a week. I’ve made that mistake in the past and I’ve ruined entire trips breaking in a new pair of shoes… or I end up having to drop serious cash on shoes in a foreign country just so that I can avoid that ruined trip. Better yet? Take a 2-mile walk in them. You’ll know pretty quickly if they work or not.
Summer trips to Europe often mean uneven sidewalks, cobblestone streets and usually walking anywhere from 10,000 – 25,000 steps a week. Sturdy shoes are a must. But you also want to look for:
- Excellent Cusioning: A heavily cushioned running shoe can feel great initially, but oversized soles can feel unstable on cobblestones. Look for moderate cushioning that absorbs impact while still allowing you to feel stable on uneven surfaces.
- Arch Support That Matches Your Feet: If you have high arches, flat feet, or a history of foot pain, support becomes even more important when you’re walking all day. A removable insole is a bonus because you can swap in your preferred orthotic if needed. I swear by Dr. Scholl’s. Even if you don’t think you need orthotics, pack a pair just in case. You may end up needing it.
- Lightweight Construction: Every ounce matters when you’re carrying luggage, climbing stairs in train stations, and walking all day. The best travel sneakers feel almost weightless.
- Breathable Materials: Summer in cities like Rome, Paris, Barcelona, and Lisbon can be hot. Mesh panels, knit uppers, and perforated leather help keep your feet cooler and reduce sweating.
- Flexible, Grippy Soles: European cities often mean slick stone streets, polished museum floors, and rainy afternoons. Look for rubber outsoles with good traction rather than smooth fashion-sneaker bottoms.
Here are my picks for the best comfortable, functional, stylish sneakers for summer vacations (especially trips to Europe!). A lot of these recommendations are from real-life reviews I’ve found on Reddit, Amazon, women’s style groups on social media and media outlets like Consumers Reports and The Strategist. So these are not random finds, but carefully curated based on what real people are saying! A lot of these are not exactly cheap, but it’s worth spending some extra $$ to take care of your feet
Adidas Onitsuka Tigers
I own these and can personally attest to the comfort level while still being super cool-girl in vibe and style. I have had several 20-somethings tell me my shoes are cool when I wear these… so if I can impress Gen Z, call me happy.
Puma Vikky 3 Sneakers
These come recommended by a good friend who spent a week in these this spring in Paris. She said she walked a ton and they kept her feet feeling very supported. She said the very clean, unassuming look of these sneakers allowed her to pair them with everything from jeans to maxi dresses.
Oncept Tokyos
I read you can find these amazing sneakers at Nordstrom Rack and sure as sh*t, there they are! People are saying they do tend to run a little large so you might want to size down. But they are praised for being both comfortable and stylish sneakers. I had never heard of these until now and I’ve added them to my own cart (and I’m not even really going anywhere this summer!).
Back70 Barkley Joggers
These may be my favorite finds. They come in couple of different color combos (I’m featuring white and gold as that seems to be the most neutral option that will go with everything on a trip) so be sure to click through to see the combos. These retro vibes are sure to slay on any summer trip and seemed to be a hot suggestion in one women’s style social media group.
Autry Medalist Sneakers
I’m not sure this would be my first pick to wear to Europe given the American flag next to the logo and the fact they don’t seem super breathable but people are singing their praises for comfort and style! These seem to sell out quickly so you may need to poke around a bit to find them in your size.
Paul Green Hadley Platform Sneaker
I like a platform sneaker and this one does not disappoint. One of the more expensive options, these do come highly recommended. They pull on easily with elastic laces, and it’s a brand that is known for its exceptional comfort.
Rag and Bone Ultra Slim Retro Runner
Another more expensive, but totally worth it, option – the Rag and Bone Ultra Slim Retro Runners are the PERFECT option for hot summer days spent trekking around any city. It’s got a coastal vibe with the raffia weave and OrthoLite foam insoles for maximum comfort. These would be among my picks if I were heading to Paris or Barcelona this summer.
VIVAIA Cecily Mesh Mary Jane Flats
I don’t know if these can technically be categorized as “sneakers” per say, but these lightweight shoes are completely breathable while still offering great support and comfort for long days on your feet. These have stellar reviews!
Alo Sunset Sneakers
The butter yellow of these sneakers are *chef’s kiss*. They have a recovery foam insole which makes it great for lots of walking but the slim profile is super on-trend at the moment.
New Balance 471 Sneakers
I own these, I love these, you cannot go wrong with these sneakers. They may not be the most original choice as they are quite popular, they are ones you truly cannot go wrong with wearing on your summer travels.
Veja Campo Sneakers
These seem to have a cult following. They have a cool-girl vibe and are a bit unassuming. Best of all? The comfortable cushioned rubber and synthetic insole.
On Cloud Cloud 6 Coast
And last but not least, the sneaker’s sneaker. This is billed as the perfect travel shoe as it’s ultralight, packable and breathable. A friend of mine said she didn’t care how “American” it made her look and when she got to Europe, there were actually boutiques that carried them and lots of people were sporting On Clouds.
Well, my friends, I hope you have a wonderful time wherever you will be walking your little hearts out this summer! Stay stylish as ever, but rest assured your feet will thank you for an investment in a good pair of functional and comfortable shoes. The best part? Sneakers seem to be paired with everything this summer from shorts to maxi dresses. Don’t forget to pack linen to stay extra cool on those hot summer days in the sun.
