Americana Summer: What To Wear to Look Chic in Red, White and Blue

As I’m writing this post, I’m thinking our east coast trip last summer and all the Americana vibes that went along with it. The blue Atlantic ocean, the bold red lobsters at every corner and white washed stately old homes full of colorful hydrangeas.. I love the subtly of the red, white and blue east coast style. Normally when I think “red, white, and blue outfit” my mind goes straight to a bedazzled tank top from 2003, Old Navy American Flag T-Shirts, and an especially embarrassing pair or star-themed jean shorts. The last few years, the most I’d do for a red-white and blue outfit is a red linen dress and white sandals – I’ve scaled the look back to be much less obvious. Classic Americana is back with it being the summer our country’s 250th anniversary. The ideal pictures we’ve seen of the Kennedy family enjoying their Cape Cod compound has me wanting to roll up my khaki pants and throw on a loose white cable knit summer sweater. But what does this all mean for 2026? Think subtle patriotism meets coastal grandmother. I’m talking striped linen sets, cherry red accessories, crisp white sundresses, and deep navy accents that feel more Serena & Lily than Uncle Sam. It’s all about wearing the palette, not the flag.

Whether you’re headed to a BBQ, a boat day, or just want to look casually festive at your neighborhood block party, here are a few of my favorite red, white, and blue outfit ideas for women who want to look understatedly chic and timelessly classic. Brands like Vineyard Vines, J.Crew, Lily Pulitzer, Tuckernuck and even Old Navy have really stepped it up for chic Americana styles.

My Picks for Red, White and Blue Tops & Summer Sweaters

You can get that patriotic looks with everything from a simple red tee paired with white shorts, an adorable blue butterfly sleeve blouse and linen pants or throw on a cozy red white and blue summer sweater for those cooler nights.

The Perfect Americana Dresses

I love nothing more than a good easy breezy dress during the summer months. You don’t have to think about coordinating an entire outfit. A navy linen dress paired with white slides and simple gold jewelry, and you’re ready to walk out the door! I tried to stick with dresses that look universally good on all body types. Sure, a clingy body-con dress may kill it for some, but it’s not for me! So I tried to stick with loose fitting, flowy, a-line dresses. Plus, those are perfect for those extra hot summer days.

Red, White and Blue Pants, Shorts & Skirts

Adorable chambray shorts, cool linen pants, even the cutest little denim skirt can look like such fun Americana style staples. I’m personally a fan of the linen pants but I just went to dinner with a friend who had on a cute white denim mini with espadrilles and a simple navy tank and it was such a clean but luxe look. Don’t be afraid to play around with patterns like block print or gingham. Those can be rather unexpected in shorts and pants so it makes it extra fun to add that little pop to your outfit.

Patriotic Shoes and Accessories

This may be my favorite category of Americana style. Just a little pinch of cuteness through shoes and your accessories can finish off the perfect outfit. For shoes think about sandals, slides, espadrilles or those classic Sperry boat shoes. For accessories, play around have fun. There are so many cute necklaces, bracelets, handbags and even headbands that are adorable without being over “cutesy”. For bags, hone in on raffia or straw… it’s that quintessential summer “it” bag.

Whether you’re planning a backyard barbecue, heading to the lake, watching fireworks, or simply love the timeless red, white, and blue aesthetic, Americana style is one trend that never goes out of fashion. These classic pieces can be mixed and matched long after the Fourth of July, making them worthwhile additions to your summer wardrobe. I hope this roundup gives you plenty of inspiration to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in effortless, patriotic style. Happy shopping, and here’s to a summer filled with sunshine, celebrations, and creating memories you’ll treasure for years to come!
