I’m Loving These Scarf Coats This Fall & Winter

I first learned of scarf coats by seeing someone wearing the iconic TOTEME embroidered scarf coat out in the wild. I literally chased her down to ask where she got the coat and the brand, looked it up when I got home, and realized that a $1,200 wool coat was not within my budget, haha. But I was obsessively thinking about the coat and still am almost a year later.

My obsession has not waned so I finally decided to go hunting for other, more reasonably priced, scarf coats and was shocked to learn there are some really cute ones out there that look just like the TOTEME scarf coat and then some other scarf coats that deviate a bit from that same design but are as equally cute in various other styles. Consider me sold!

What Is A Scarf Coat?

Well, it’s not anything groundbreaking and is just what you might guess it is: a coat with a coordinating scarf built into the design. Some are actually attached, while others simply come with an oversized matching scarf that can be wrapped, draped or tossed over your shoulder. And while I wouldn’t necessarily call a coat with a scarf groundbreaking, there is something about the combination that makes an otherwise simple coat look really, really good.

Part of the appeal is that scarf coats fit perfectly with the more understated, classic style we’ve been seeing over the past few seasons. Think long wool coats, neutral colors, oversized scarves, loafers, simple sweaters and pieces that don’t necessarily scream “trend.” They are also surprisingly versatile. I’ve seen beautiful versions in camel, chocolate brown, gray, black and cream, along with shorter jacket styles that feel a little more casual. You can wear one over jeans and a sweater during the day and just as easily throw it over trousers or a dress when you want to look a little more pulled together.

What I looked for when chasing that TOTEM look/feel? I looked for wool or wool-blend fabrics as warmth is important to me since I live in a colder winter climate. Coat length matters, too. Longer scarf coats have that beautiful, almost blanket-coat look, while cropped and mid-length versions are easier for everyday errands and getting in and out of the car.

I also pay attention to the scarf itself. An oversized scarf gives you more styling options, but you don’t want so much fabric that you feel swallowed by it. A scarf that drapes easily and is proportional to the coat tends to look the most effortless.

And with that, here are some of the scarf coats I’m loving this fall and winter. My personal favorite? The one from Quince. But all below work really well.

I think this is one of the easier fall and winter trends to incorporate into a wardrobe you already own. You aren’t buying something that requires a very specific outfit underneath it. In fact, the scarf coat is usually the thing that makes the basics underneath look better.

If you’re buying one specifically because you want to wear it for several winters, I’d stick with camel, gray, chocolate brown, cream or black and look for a fairly traditional coat silhouette. The scarf detail makes it feel current now, but the coat itself should still work even after the trend quiets down.

And considering I already spend most of winter trying to figure out how to be warm without looking like I’ve wrapped myself in a sleeping bag, I’m very much on board with a coat that comes with its own scarf.
