Why We’re Still Obsessed With Coastal Grandmother Style in 2026
A few summers ago, I couldn’t scroll Instagram for more than thirty seconds without seeing crisp linen pants, oversized button-down shirts and woven tote bags paired with a coffee overlooking the ocean. Suddenly everyone was talking about coastal grandmother style. While the name made me laugh at first (I wasn’t quite ready to identify as anyone’s grandmother), I completely understood why the aesthetic exploded in popularity. It wasn’t really about age at all. It was about dressing in a way that felt relaxed, polished, and effortlessly put together.

As someone in my 40s, I’ve found myself gravitating toward this style more each year. It doesn’t chase trends, yet it never feels outdated. It prioritizes quality over quantity, timeless pieces over fast fashion and confidence over trying too hard. That’s probably why it has become one of the most enduring style movements of the decade. And now, as we move into 2026, coastal grandmother style is evolving once again.
What Is Coastal Grandmother Style?
Despite the name, you don’t need to live on the coast. And you certainly don’t need grandchildren (heaven forbid as I’ve got an 11-year old!!) Coastal grandmother style describes an elevated, relaxed aesthetic inspired by women who appear to have mastered effortless living. It’s pretty basic: linen, crips white shirts, lightweight sweaters, tailored shorts, woven everything, comfy sandals and shoes and classic gold jewelry. Easy peasy!

The goal isn’t to look expensive, it’s to look timeless. Many people associate the aesthetic with Nancy Meyers movies, where every home is flooded with natural light and everyone somehow looks perfectly dressed while making homemade lemonade. In fact, I see so many posts about “In my Nancy Meyer era”. The clothing follows that same philosophy: comfortable enough for everyday life, polished enough for dinner with friends. For a long time my style was… well I don’t know if I had a style. It was sort of boho Stevie Nicks meets athleisurewear. I think the pandemic got me out of dressing for work and really honing in on a look for myself. For several years after, I was living in comfy athletic sets, leggings and oversized sweatshirts. I’m officially OVER it. Which is what got me poking around about this whole coastal grandmother vibe.
Where Did Coastal Grandmother Style Come From?
The term “coastal grandmother” was used by TikTok creator Lex Nicoleta in 2022 after she noticed a recurring aesthetic inspired by characters from films like Something’s Gotta Give and It’s Complicated. While I don’t know if she actually gave it the name (those origins are likely debatable and I’m far too lazy to go down that official rabbit hole), social media picked up on it, but it seems the (previously unnamed) style itself had existed for decades.
Women in places like Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and coastal California have embraced relaxed luxury for generations. Designers like Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, and Eileen Fisher have long built collections around natural fabrics, clean tailoring and understated elegance.
TikTok simply introduced the look to a younger audience and gave it a memorable name. However, unlike many viral aesthetics, coastal grandmother style didn’t disappear after one season. At some point, most of us stop wanting closets full of trendy pieces we’ll only wear once. We begin looking for clothing that works together, travels well and makes getting dressed easier. Coastal grandmother style checks every one of those boxes. It also fits beautifully into the growing interest in capsule wardrobes, quiet luxury and intentional shopping. Rather than buying twenty trendy tops every summer, women are investing in fewer, higher-quality pieces they’ll wear for years.
I’ve found that’s especially true among women in their 40s and 50s. We’re less interested in chasing every trend and more interested in creating wardrobes that genuinely work for our lifestyles. How Coastal Grandmother Style Is Evolving for 2026
While the foundation remains timeless, 2026 is introducing fresh updates that make the look feel more personal.

Think: more color, texture, and personality with relaxed tailoring. Silhouettes are becoming softer with less fitted blazers and skinny pants. In the past, the color palette used to stick to creams and tans, but this year, I’m seeing it expand into soft blues, seafoam and olive greens, butter yellow and beautiful navy and corals. (Blue continues to be one of my favorite colors for summer because it always feels fresh without trying too hard. If you’re looking for inspiration, you’ll love my article on Blue in Summer.) One of my favorite changes I see women making is they are making coastal grandmother their own style. They are mixing coastal classics with colorful sneakers, statement jewelry, and vintage finds. Have fun with it!
The Coastal Grandmother Wardrobe for 2026
If you’re building a wardrobe from scratch, these are the pieces I’d prioritize. Start simple and you can add more pieces like linen dresses, straw hats, gold jewelry, fun sneakers and tailored shorts. But at the very least, what you see below is where I’d begin!

The Best Brands for Coastal Grandmother Style
One of the reasons this aesthetic has become so popular is that it’s available at nearly every price point.
Some of my favorite places to shop include:
Investment Pieces
- Jenni Kayne
- Frank & Eileen
- Eileen Fisher
- Vince
- Tuckernuck
Mid-Range Favorites
- J.Crew
- Madewell
- Banana Republic
- Quince
- Everlane
Budget-Friendly Options
- Gap
- Old Navy
- Target
- H&M
- Mango
I also love mixing in vintage pieces from local consignment stores. Often those older linen shirts and woven handbags have even more character than brand-new versions.
While countless fashion trends come and go, coastal grandmother style has proven it’s more than a fleeting social media moment. Its staying power comes from something much more meaningful: it encourages thoughtful shopping, versatile wardrobes, and timeless dressing that works in real life. For me, that’s the biggest takeaway. I don’t want a closet filled with clothes that feel outdated after one season. I want pieces I can wear to brunch with friends, a weekend by the lake, a European vacation or dinner on the patio and feel just as confident each time.
If 2026 is teaching us anything, it’s that the best version of coastal grandmother style isn’t about looking like everyone else. It’s about creating an effortless wardrobe that feels authentically yours.
