The Evil Eye Edit: Pretty Things With a Little Protection
I have a friend that LOVES all things evil eyes. That, and skulls, have become signature talismans of hers. She’s incredibly stylish and chic to begin with and I love that everytime I see her she has on an evil eye necklace, or carrying a tote with the symbol beaded into it, sometimes even her nails have evil eye designs (and her nails are a whole mood in and of themselves!). I’ve always been drawn toward the symbol myself, but her love them always has me on the lookout for anything featuring them.

What Is An Evil Eye?
You’ve probably seen the symbol before. That little blue-and-white design that shows up on everything from delicate gold necklaces and beaded bracelets to sweaters, handbags, and home decor. It’s pretty, a little mysterious, and has a history that goes back thousands of years. The evil eye is an ancient belief that someone can bring misfortune, bad luck, or harm to another person simply through a jealous or envious glance. The idea is that envy, whether intentional or not, can carry negative energy.

Interestingly, the eye-shaped charms we recognize today are actually meant to do the opposite. They’re worn as symbols of protection, traditionally believed to ward off the evil eye and keep that negative energy away.
So while the name might sound a little ominous, the jewelry and accessories associated with it are generally meant to represent good luck, protection, and positive intentions.
A Little History Lesson…
The belief in the symbol back thousands of years, with the tradition reaching as far back as ancient Mesopotamia (I have to admit I didn’t know anything about Mesopotamia until researching the evil eye, shame on me). It eventually became widespread throughout the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and parts of Asia.
Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that envy could cause genuine harm, particularly to people who seemed especially fortunate, beautiful, or successful. To protect themselves and their families, people wore amulets and displayed protective symbols.
Eventually, different cultures developed their own versions of these protective charms. Although the designs and traditions vary, the underlying idea is similar: protecting yourself and the things you love from envy and misfortune. The traditional blue-and-white design is especially recognizable. In some Mediterranean traditions, blue eyes were considered particularly powerful, which helped give blue its association with protection.

Incorporating The Design Into Everyday Wear
I love the idea of wearing something that protects you while also being a bit of a stylish statement piece. I am someone who can feel other people’s energy and at times, can feel if someone is sucking the energy from me to take it for themselves. I know that all sounds a bit “woo woo” but it’s just something that I’ve always felt. If a person is just all-around negative, I can usually sense that right away. If someone is a very giving and happy person, I can sense that as well. I’ve also noticed that the mood of a room can change just by the energy of one person entering the room. Maybe it’s all in my head but given all of that, I like to wear evil eyes to ward off anyone trying to steal my own mojo!
There are so many fun ways to wear it: jewelry, clothing, bags, and accessories – the sky is the limit! Here are a few of my favorites.
Why Is the Evil Eye Still So Popular?
Part of the evil eye’s appeal is that it can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s a meaningful symbol tied to family traditions and cultural beliefs. For others, it’s a little reminder to protect their peace, welcome good energy, or simply, carry a bit of luck with them.
And, of course, it’s found its way into fashion. As you can see above, evil eye motifs are on everything from dainty gold necklaces and colorful beaded bracelets to embroidered sweaters, handbags, and even home accessories.
Whether you believe in its protective powers or just appreciate the symbolism, there’s something charming about wearing a piece with a little history and meaning behind it.
