Stylish Folding Chairs for Holiday Hosting: Extra Seating You Won’t Mind At The Table

For my wedding, someone gifted us four folding chairs. It was not on our registry, and I thought what an odd gift it was to give to someone. Folding chairs? Why? At the time, we were living in a 750 sq. foot house and were not planning on hosting anything other than a quick drop in from a friend down the block. The chairs were actually cute. Not the typical metal or plastic folding chairs you see in a church or elementary school gym for the 5th grade performance. They had a wood frame and nice upholstered seating. Cute but not at all useful for me at the time.

Cut to moving into our family home a few years later. I volunteered to host our very first Thanksgiving and had to fit 14 people at a table and only had 8 chairs. Ah-ha! Time to pull out those chairs I thought were such a ridiculous gift. They fit at the table and blended in beautifully. It was only then that I realized how much ugly folding chairs can really mess with the look of a pretty holiday table. But with cute, stylish, attractive folding chairs, you don’t see that glaring metal chair sight-on-seen and see the beautiful table full of pretty plates and decor instead.

Here’s the good news: folding chairs have come a long way. There are wooden, upholstered, and even genuinely pretty options that fold flat into a closet the other 360 days of the year, and some look good enough that guests won’t realize they’re the “extra” seats.

What to Look For in a Nice Looking Folding Chair

Material sets the vibe. Material is the biggest factor in whether a chair looks like furniture or like emergency seating. Solid wood, such as beech, acacia, or teak, reads as warm and intentional and fits most dining rooms. Powder-coated metal in a matte color like black, cream, or sage can look modern and clean, as long as it isn’t the shiny gray classic. Upholstered or woven seats in rattan, cane, or fabric add softness and make the chair feel like a deliberate design choice.

Check the seat height. This is the detail most people miss. A standard dining table is about 28 to 30 inches tall, so you want a seat height of roughly 17 to 19 inches. Many folding chairs sit lower, and guests end up eating with their chins near their plates. If you’re mixing folding chairs with your regular dining chairs, measure your existing seats and match them as closely as you can. I made this mistake once by just using our kitchen chairs at our dining room table and the height difference was completely obvious. Luckily, I just put the kids in those chairs so they were none the wiser, but adults will really feel the difference.

Comfort counts for long meals. Holiday dinners can last hours, not minutes. Look for a contoured or slightly angled backrest rather than a flat slat, and a seat that’s at least 15 to 16 inches deep. A padded seat, or a chair that accommodates a tie-on cushion, makes a big difference when that tipsy uncle settles in for pie and a second round of stories.

Make sure it’s stable. A good folding chair shouldn’t wobble or creak. Look for a locking mechanism or a sturdy cross-brace, and check the weight capacity. 250 pounds or more is a safe baseline for adult guests. Reviews that mention “wobbly” or “flimsy” are a red flag, however cute the photos are. Also, do not put any elderly folks in folding chairs. They might be perfectly capable, but I did have someone who needed the support of a heavier chair when going to stand after a long period of time.

Think about storage. The whole point is that these disappear when you don’t need them. Check the folded depth if you plan to slide them behind a door or into a closet. Some styles fold almost completely flat, while others stay bulky. Wall-hanging chairs, the kind with a hole or hook in the backrest, can double as decor when they’re put away.

Protect your floors. Metal feet can scratch hardwood. Look for rubber or felt foot caps, or plan to add felt pads yourself. I do this with my everyday kitchen chairs and our wood floor still gets scuffed a bit.

Buy in sets and check the price per chair. Many nicer folding chairs come in sets of two or four, which can bring the price per chair down considerably. Decide how many guests you realistically need to seat, and buy enough to keep the look consistent. Two matching chairs plus two mismatched ones tends to look a bit more sloppy, while four matching ones look planned.

Okay, enough of my yammering! Here are a few favorites worth buying before the hosting season sneaks up on you.
