Weekend Wrap-Up

This weekend was a whirlwind! I drove a car full of family to Rochester, NY for a graduation party. It’s not a long drive from where I am in Michigan so we decided to celebrate the graduate. Leaving at 6:30am, I had two tweens, a teen and two grandparents in the car and I didn’t feel like making pricey stops at Starbucks or McDonald’s so I made these breakfast burritos. They kept everyone happy and full for the entire car ride so there is something to be said for that! (Although I did have snacks for each person based on their personal snack preferences, that may have helped keep them happy and content for the rest of the car ride.) Tip? Don’t get snacks for road trips anywhere other than the dollar store. No one ever eats a full bag of chips or candy. There’s no need to pay full price for a large bag when you can likely find a smaller item at the dollar store for 1/4 of the full size cost.

We left early as we wanted to visit The Strong Museum of Play. At first, I was hesitant about going… I was with an 11, 12 and soon-to-be 14 year old. A “museum of play” seemed like maybe it would be too babyish for their ages. Play? They won’t even utter the word anymore (sniff, sniff). Well… I stand corrected. Our group ranged in age from 11 to 79 and we all had a BLAST. There is something there to appeal to every age. My personal favorite was the Video Game Hall of Fame. I played Pac Man, the OG Super Mario which was projected onto a giant screen, the original Pong and so much more.

The oldest in our group, at 79, is a retired architect, and got lost playing SIM City for the first time. We also had so much fun in the pinball exhibit and the playlab. TIP: They do have a super cool SkyLine Climb area the boys were super excited to do, but they require closed-toe shoes and all three were in Birkenstocks. SO – if you do visit? Make sure everyone is wearing sneakers (they do not allow Crocs either!).

From there, we checked into our hotel. Shout out to the Comfort Inn! We needed somewhere (fairly) inexpensive to stay and this place delivered! It was SO CLEAN! The beds were comfortable, with plenty of pillows on each bed, tons of towels in the room… and did I mention how clean it was? Anyone needing a place to rest in that area (I’m not talking luxury hotel, but a budget-friendly newly reno’d moderate hotel), you really cannot go wrong with the Comfort Inn.

Graduation parties filled our Saturday summer evening, followed by a delicious breakfast at my aunt and uncle’s new home on Sunday morning. We hit the road around 11 and made a very impromptu decision to visit Niagara Falls since it was (somewhat) on our route home. I had not been to Niagara since I was a child myself and it is still just as grand and wonderful as I remember it being! I wouldn’t mind going back to do some of the more kitschy tourist things like the wax museum and taking the boat that goes under or right up to the falls.

Sunday evening I got back into the swing of making lunch since camp starts this week and I sat in silence, on my bed, reading. An extremely social weekened always means I need to recharge my battery by being alone (and ideally, not speaking to anyone).

As always, here are the things I’ve been thinking about, reading, watching, cooking, planning, or adding to my cart!

The heat here in Michigan is oppressive this week so I’ve ordered a portable misting fan to help keep me cool when I have to be outside (which I’m trying not to be during hte intense heat during the main part of the day).

I just finished reading London Falling by Patrick Radden Keefe and holy cow was it good! Consider me a forever fan of anything this author ever writes. There’s a reason why it’s got almost 5-star reviews from most who read it. Next up? Villa Coco by Andrew Sean Greer.

This lovely little necklace just arrived on my porch yesterday. I plan to wear it this weekend during 4th of July festivities.

I have quite a few tomato plants growing in pots on my deck. I recently read that tomatoes should only be watered right at the base. I needed to get a watering can that I could easily just get the water to the plant so I needed one with a long spout and this one had great ratings, so in the cart it went!

This two piece short set is perfect for those hot days ahead. No notes.

I like to keep my hair up more during the summer and was looking for cute claw clips. This one is so fun and seasonal!

I’ve been looking for dresses that are easy breezy and a little something more girly than the normal linen dresses I’ve been wearing of-late, and I came across this adorable cotton lace-trim sundress. It would even be cute thrown over a bathing suit.

When I was shopping for my Meta glasses, I tried on a pair of Ray Ban Reverse Wayfarer sunglasses and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them. I MAY have to purchase these as a belated birthday gift to myself. 😉

I love the TV show, The Bear, so much that I’ve been hesitant to start watching because I know I’ll be so sad once I get through the season since it’s the last one. But I think I need to start it this week.

The last thing I need is another pair of Birkenstocks, but this pair with the Basalt Gray and gold big buckle combo has me wanting to get just one last pair for the summer.

We have blueberry picking on our calendar in a couple of weeks, so I’ve been looking up some recipes for muffins and desserts. I came across a blueberry buckle recipe that I plan to make with our fresh blueberries.
